My son is 10, going into grade 5. I know technically I should start him in level 2. However, in all honesty, the last few years have been pretty relaxed/eclectic/crazy and we have not been consistent in doing copywork daily. Now, he does know all the capitalization and punctuation rules, but he could use some work in synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and prefixes and suffixes.

I am toying with starting him in level 1, and just working through it faster. I know that we could start him a little farther along in the book for starters, and then I thought we could do it daily, instead of twice a week. Doing that, we would be able to start level 2 by March. And then we could continue doing lessons daily for awhile, then perhaps work at it over the summer a couple days a week. I figure we could be “caught up” by next school year.

Would that be feasible at all? Has anyone ever started an older child on the lower level?

Both of my kids are in lower than grade levels. My 6th grader is about 1/3 of the way through level 1 and my 8th grader is in level 2. We do 3 lessons week, but only dictate 2. The 3rd lesson is grammar only. At the rate of 3 a week my 8th grader can still get through the whole series by graduation. My 6th grader will slow to 2 a week when we are “caught up”. Sonya recommended not doing a lesson every day as it can be too much grammar at once.
