I saw the online videos on the Analytical Grammar site and I was wondering if “Teaching the Essay & Research Paper” should be started in 9th grade after the AG program has been completed. I know writing is a process and I’m wondering if starting the program in HS would be enough time to practice their writing skills or should they start a little earlier.

I don’t have a problem putting my thoughts on paper, but I do have a challenging time explaining it to my dd and actually grading someone else’s work if that makes any sense.

    Thanks and God bless!

I probably wouldn’t start the Teaching the Essay and Teaching the Research Paper until high school. However, those are fairly short courses — just a few weeks each. That’s one reason I like them so much: clear and concise. So go ahead and plan on using them if you need them. Not every student will need to learn those two skills.

The Essay focuses on writing a five-paragraph Literary Essay according to the formula that most colleges expect. It doesn’t really leave a lot of room for incorporating personal style the way we are used to encouraging our children to do in their narrations. It is a narrow focused course for a specific purpose. If your child is not college bound, you probably don’t need to teach her how to follow the formula. Does that make sense?
