ParticipantHow teacher intensive beyond Elementary is Math U See? Would a 7th grader and an Algebra 1 user beable to do this program on their own other than the parent checking their work? How does it work? Would the student watch a video and read a lesson written to them? I would like to use the program but cannot if it is not student led. I am working outside the home and need them to beable to do their math without me. Thanks in advance to all who respond!

ParticipantI think it requires more involvement from the parent at those levels than say Teaching Textbooks, from what I’ve heard. Our oldest did MUS Algebra 1 this year and did the live online class which was very good but he still needed help sometimes. I’ve heard good things about Kahn Academy but never checked it out as a program to follow beyond occasional help with things.

ParticipantI think it depends how good at math your student is. My 15yo does geometry pretty much on his own. He watches the video and does the worksheets. He’s only needed my help a handful of times. So if you have kids that are fairly good at math (not super mathy, but not struggling), I think it can be very independent.

ParticipantI agree with Erin. However, both of my kiddos have needed lots of handholding through higher level math. I sit down every day with my daughter and we do algebra together.

ParticipantSo there is no teacher preparation required? The lessons are taught to the student by watching a DVD, am I correct? Is there reading that needs to be done by student or parent?

ParticipantI do no teacher prep. He watches the video and reads the lesson at the beginning of the week, then he completes the worksheets all week, and writes the test on Friday.
