Hi SCM Personnel! I will be using your Bible/Geography/History package which includes Hungry Planet: What the World Eats and Material World both by Peter Menzel. These two books sparked some questions for me.  I would love to have them out on my coffee table as conversation pieces, they are incredible, I am glad they are a part of this curriculum… but, is it enhancing or detracting to have these out for my children to browse?  Is it more impactful to keep them put up and use only  the parts specified in the lesson when it comes up? In general is it good to let them “have at it” or to regulate certain material that you are using in a teaching session? They have many books they have browsed, but have not read into further than captions to the pictures.  I may pick them up to use them in a lesson here or there but have I lost some of the interest because they have already gone through the book… at the same time I want lots of books like these around for them to use daily. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Following this.

I think you have a very good question and can see the side of letting them see the book when they want on the coffee table as well as putting it up so it’s not losing it’s luster. We will be using this next school year, my personal thought on how our family might do it would maybe be to put it out for a couple days after use each month, then put it away for a while except for teaching with it?

These are favorite browsing books at our house.  We have them always available for dd14, ds11, dd7, ds5. This has in no way diminished our study time with the books. We’ve had them for years now.

So there you go . . . two great answers from two great families. 🙂

I guess it depends on your children. If having access to those books for browsing between lessons would cause “familiarity breeds contempt,” then keep them on the shelf for lessons only. If, however, access to them does not diminish the children’s enthusiasm for them, keep them on the coffee table.
