For those of you who have used Queen’s curriculum, do you think that it is enough to prepare the student for college?

We are looking at their Language Lessons, Discovering History, Geography, and Sciences.  Maybe spelling ….

They have some decent things for elementary and maybe middle school but I wouldn’t use any of their materials in high school-especially if my child was planning on college. They are definitely not college prep.

I honestly feel like many of their products are dumbed down. I have not been impressed with any thing that I have seen from them.

I have owned and tried the following from their company: their language arts program, a copywork book and their history program. I have checked out samples of their other offerings online and at our state convention. They do not look like living books nor are they truly CM in my opinion.

I hate to sound so negative but these are my honest feelings concerning their products.

We used their “All Nature Sings” book for nature study.  It was okay at first but after a while the story just seemed too forced.  I am a Christian and don’t mind a religious light being shed on our homeschool materials at all, but I thought they put more emphasis on religion than nature study.  It was like “Read this contrived allegory of your walk as a Christian that just happened to be written about animals.  Now draw a picture of that animal and copy this Bible verse.”  I wanted a book for nature study, not a devotional that has you occasionally draw a squirrel or leaf.

I would tend to agree with previous posters. I used a good many of their resources in my children’s younger years.  I loved their copy work books (except the fact that the books were typeface letters as opposed to true manuscript letters).  I used many of their language lessons books for younger years, but found the older books were mainly large sections of copy work and could only use them as a supplement.  I did enjoy their copies of Rosalyn’s Good Shephard (don’t think they have it anymore) and the Testimony of Charlie Coulson.  What I did appreciate was their liberal use of beautiful paintings throughout all their language arts books, so what I did was go through all of them, rip those pages out, and put them in sheet protectors.  Now I have a nice binder of paintings.

But I tend to agree…their studies are not rigorous enough for college prep,  and my kids are average students; I had always found the offerings on Ambleside too much for my kids, but have appreciated Simply Charlotte Mason’s suggestions of living books…some older classics but also newer titles that Miss Mason would likely have chosen.  A wide range of titles to work with.

I loved their language arts book for when my daughters were  preschool/kindergarten age.  My littles loved “doing school” and it kept them still so I could help the older ones. But I only used the early books for all the reasons mentioned above.

As a company, I think their motives are good, but I don’t think their materials are near as good a quality (educationally) as SCM. Their materials have little to no margin space, so the typed stuff is hard to read, and no space for notes….things about SCM I really like.  In my opinion Queen materials just don’t have a professional appearance….and yet they are pricey.

I’m using some Queen’s stuff this year. I really like the Language Lessons for my kindergartner, and it’s decent for the 2nd grader, but for my 4th grader it is not enough. There is a lot of copywork and not enough of the other stuff.

I like the word of the week stuff and we did a Bible study that I really enjoyed. Their picture study material is also nice. It’s set up differently than SCM. It’s not by artist but by time period.

I used one of their language arts books when my oldest was in first grade.  LA is by far his worst subject and he was EASILY able to complete the entire book in 9 weeks.  I even went up 2 levels from what was suggested for him.  I just did not find it rigorous enough at all.

We also tried out one of their science books that year and dropped it after 6 weeks.  The story was terrible and most real information was gained by researching on the internet.

Unfortunately I agree with the above. What I did like about their langage book was the beautiful art work – I loved having copywork, picture study etc… all in one place. That said the books IMO are very overpriced (especially for me as a Canadian). Now are they any lighter than any other CM approach? No, not IMO. I would say they’re on par with SCM and just basic CM philosophy for the elementary years. But for middle/high school, while I haven’t used them, they look light to me.

Thank you all for your input.  I liked what I had seen but was concerned that it wasn’t progressing enough to be a solid program for the later years.  I appreciate your honest reviews.

We use all of their subjects for my girls, they are 12 and 14.  I did so much research and prayer over this.  I went back and read every post on their FB page of all the moms that said how well prepared their kids were for college and how well they tested.  Queens is meant for all of their subjects to be used together.  The kids have to dig to find answers.  Do a search on here for Queen and you’ll find more moms that do really like it too.  Just my point of view here.  We’ve tried other curriculum’s too and always go back to Queen.

Thank you, mistylavon, for another perspective.  It is good to hear that it is working well for someone in the upper grades!
