I have a copy of Primary Language Lessons by Emma Serl and was wondering if anyone here has used it.  I’m considering using it with my 2nd grader next year.  Any thoughts on this book and how/when to use it would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!

As a follow up to my first question, I am planning on usng Simply Grammer in 4th grade, which I also already have.  Should I just not “mess” with anything else to simplify schooling?  I have no desire to teach things that are not needed yet!
    thanks again!

We have it, use it, and love it!!  We do English 1 – 3x a week, depending on the term.  Starting in 1st grade, it took my son 3 years to go through between keeping the lessons short and managable for a first grader, and taking 1/2 year off to learn cursive.  (One of the lessons about midway is in cursive, and he couldn’t read the lesson!  He was interested in cursive, so we took 1/2 year to learn cursive instead of skipping the lesson.  It never occured to me that if you didn’t know how to write in cursive, you would have trouble reading it!)  I’m sure it can be done in less time, we just took it slow.  He (and now my daughter) love this book.  You’ll have great fun with this book.

I used it for my son from 2nd to 4th (he’s doing ILL, now) and my dd is almost finished her first year with it (finishing 3rd gr.). It is wonderful. My only suggestion (and opinion) is that it has too much writing for ones so young in it’s exercises; so what we did was we did about 75% of the exercises orally and they learned the material fine. My son wrote less than my dd, who doesn’t mind as much writing and is more tactile anyway. It has been very beneficial.

It is designed as a two year program, so starting now, doing 2-4x a week will cause you to be finshed in time for Simply Grammar.

I also recommend the Ruth Heller World of Language books alongside for leisure reading independantly or aloud.

It’s my opinion that children will not be turned away from LA from using PLL; it covers all the important points for this age group without making it arduous. Mine actually enjoy language and putting it together well and I think PLL facilitated that interest. I really recommend the Teacher’s Guide put out by Lost Classics, it helps you answer so much.

I hope ya’ll enjoy it, too!

Sort of along the same lines….Has anyone ever done a comparison of PLL and English for the Thoughtful Child?  As best as I can tell they are pretty similar in approach…wondering if there are any big differences between them.

    Just curious.
