Has anyone ever used the Prairie Primer? Can it work well with a CM approach to learning?
Melanie32ParticipantI used the Prairie Primer with my daughter several years ago. I think she was about 9 or 10. We enjoyed it for a little while. I think it depends on how old your kids are. My friend is using it with a 10 year old boy and 7 year old girl and they seem to be enjoying it. It definitely uses living books and then adds in lots of hands on activities. We found a lovely free lapbook for the Little House in the Big Woods unit. That was our favorite unit. I think we kind of fizzled out after that.
The only way unit studies have worked in my home is to use them for a brief period for something different and fun. We get tired of them after a while. I didn’t feel like the Prairie Primer did a very good job of tying the different subjects together. One day we studied owls because an owl was mentioned in the chapter we read that day. That just seems kind of silly to me. Not only does it seem a little far fetched-it’s also something I can easily do on my own if I choose to. I don’t really need someone to tell me to go read a book about owls because an owl was a small part of the reading that day.
The strength of the Prairie Prime is in it’s literature, history and hands on activities. Those are fairly well done and can be a lot of fun. 🙂
