I would like to possibly consider a time period for my son. Up until now we have concentrated on the 3 rs and added reading biographies this year. The biographies were geared to the discoverers and explorers. He will be entering 4 th gr next and has a very short attention span, so I don’t intend to over tax him with too much, but to gently help him increase his focus. Ok so now my question is , where would you suggest to begin him for a time period. Keeping in mind he has 9 more yrs to go and and if we need to repeat time periods etc.

    will appreciate , suggestions

There are several approaches you could take and the best one will be determined by your personal preferences and circumstances, and, of course your child’s interest and needs.  One option is to start at the beginning and move through the eras from ancients to modern like the SCM modules do.  You may opt to cycle through once then repeat the ancients when you have finished.  This wouldn’t allow you to finish a second cycle, but that may not matter to you.

Another option is to decide which eras you may like to repeat a second time at start there — for example — starting with Mod 5 (4th grade) and (5th grade) then move back to Mod 1 for 6th grade, that would have you repeating Mod 5 in 10 and 6 in 11.  You could either revisit the ancients in 12 or free up your schedule for another needed credit or elective in the final year of highschool.

You could choose something that would allow you to proceed with 2 four year cycles (many other curriculums use a four year cycle), and again use that final year for more advanced subjects or electives.

Another option is to simply let him choose what he is interested in learning about for the next couple of years, then start the 6 year cycle in 7th (or two for year cycles in 5th or 6th or whatever appeals to you) when his attention span has grown a little more.  Maybe he would like to study the history of transportation, or learn more about the vikings or spend more time on science experiments.

If you opt to start the SCM mod, there are many ways to proceed — follow the guides (they are really inexpensive compared to most curriculums) or the free on line suggestions.  Either way you are free to substitute any resource that you wish if you feel there is something more suitable for your son.  The Guides are great if you want to follow their Bible reading plan, but feel free to use another.  If you find the SCM scheduled readings too long, you can spread them out more.  It’s all really flexible.
