How can I determine where I should place my child in the ULW series? The child I am thinking of will be in 5th grade, is a great reader and knows many, but not all, of the topics listed for bk 2, but there are several from bk 1 that he likely doesn’t know well. Should I 1) put him in bk 1 but do it twice as fast as normally recommended (so he would complete it in a year and move to bk 2 next year)? 2) Put him in bk 1 but normal speed (I hesitate with this option because he’ll have a younger sister starting bk 1 as well and don’t want him to feel bad for being in the same book as her)? 3) Start in bk 2? 4)some other option 🙂

    Thanks!

I think I would start him in Book 2 but maybe try to think of a way for him to help with his sister’s Book 1 lessons. That way he would have a review of those points but not feel like he was being demoted.

If that arrangement wouldn’t work, probably your idea of moving him through the lessons in Book 1 would work. If you did the guided discovery sections and skipped some of the transcription/dictation portions, you could probably do that quick pace pretty easily in order to review. I wouldn’t try to have him do all the transcriptions and dictations moving at that pace, especially if your main purpose is to review the usage and mechanics points.
