Any suggestions to replace Apologia Physical Science with?  I plan to use some living books on the topics he chooses from the Apologia textbook and have him write a paper or book report after reading each book.  Did anyone do something different than Apologia?  We have no co-ops for him to attend in our area so not an option.  Also he is in 9th grade and has no desire to attend college.

I am using Exploration Education with my 9th grader this year.  He is doing it as part of a co op class, but my 2 older children did it at home by themselves when they were in 9th grade.  My 2 older ones did it after having completed Apologia Physical Science in 8th grade, because we didn’t seem to click with Apologia.  (We tried Apologia General Science, too – not a good fit for our family.)

Exploration Education is a whole kit that contains all the parts and pieces to complete all the experiments and demonstrations.  It also has a CD-ROM that contain all of the lessons.

You can find out more about it at this website: explorationeducation.com.

The 101 Series might be a good fit.  It can be used as a DVD supplement to another program or with the included guide as a program by itself.  The guide mostly has them research topics and write papers.

Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum,  pacworks . com is another option.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>It was written for at risk boys, and attempts to make it relevant.</p>

Thank you all for the recommendations.  I will certainly look at all of them.

Holly, I have the 101 series for biology, I know there is one for chemistry but I wasn’t aware there was any for the physical science topics?

Physical science is considered pre chemistry and pre physics,  so you could use the 101 chemistry and physics and call it physical science.  Of course then you would need something different for chemistry.

Ah! I didn’t realize that, oops.  Thanks for clarifying that, retrofam.

I like what I’m seeing so far with the exploration education.  Building things is right up his alley, so those projects look like the way to go.  I hope, I really need to stop spending money, ugh!!!!

We planned to use EE physical science samples as a guide and piece together our own due to the cost and some reviews that some of the kit materials were frustrating.  We ended up skipping physical science because my son is going to take physics later instead.

I may revisit this plan for my younger children later.

I mentioned it because you may want to read some reviews so that you are aware of the drawbacks of the curriculum.  You may need some additional replacement materials if you go with the program as intended.  I think one problem was the balsa wood airplane that broke and was needed for later experiments for one reviewer’s son.

What are the childs interests because apologia has other books that we really enjoyed, like the flying creatures and astronomy. Maybe you can borrow from a friends and just let him read them for fun? Martha
