Hello!  I have never lived in a house that had an appreciable linen closet.  But we have a lot of people, beds, and towels.  I have not yet settled on any workable system or organization for our family of 7.  We have towels, beach towels, sheets, and other bedding.  We have one very shallow, very small linen closet.

What does your family do to organize these items?  We have really small bedroom closets as well, and cannot afford (neither in $ or space) some other form of furniture or closet or armoire.

    Thoughts?

    thanks,

    amy

I put sheets for each bedroom on the top shelf in the closet of that bedroom.  I put towels in the bathroom that they belong in (right now that is only one set each bathroom). Kitchen towels/wash cloths have a drawer in the kitchen. Extra towels go in the laundry room.

I am with pangit.. also .. I learned long ago.. one set of sheets per bed.  When they need to be washed it just needs to be done.  When they puke on them.. well wash them up.. in the mean time we have lots of extra blankets on beds that can be shared in the mean time.

Only other thing is we have a cabinet in our laundry room for the extra towls.  The beach towels we keep either one the line, caue they aer always in use or in a trash bag that goes in our closet on the top shelf all winter.  Don’t need them put them where you can’t reach them is my motto.

Shoot, I had it all typed out and deleted it!  We store sheets in the room they are needed, in a Rubbermaid container (contains the mess and keeps them clean).  Either on the top shelf or under the bed.  I fold the sheets into the pillowcase.  Each kid has one set, and I have 2 extra sets for nighttime messes.  If all 4 of them are sick or pee at once I’m in trouble!  We have 2 extra queen sets (our bed size and the air mattress size).

One towel per person plus 2 more for guests.  We use the bath towels for pool/beach.  I have a few older, threadbare ones for mopping up water and other messes.  I’ve learned to fold them so they all fit on one shelf in the hall/linen closet.

We have 6 small blankets for winter, I fold them and stick them in the corner of the living room, at the end of the couch where you can’t really see them.  In summer they go into a storage tub in the garage or shed.  I have 2 or 3 larger (queen size) blankets for guests that get stored in whatever closets I can find or under beds in Rubbermaid containers.  In winter we may use them ourselves.

Our sheets/blankets are in an under-the-bed storage container.  (my son’s is in my daughter’s room, as he has a mates bed, so there is no under-the bed.)   We have 1 towel per person, hanging on a hook in the bathroom (one colour per child) – and then 2 extra for guests.

Sheets can be stored between the mattress and boxspring if you fold carefully. That’s a great space saver!

Beach towels are kept in one of those underbed storage boxes – unless it’s summer, and then they are kept on the coat rack.

I agree that paring down linens helps a lot. I keep only one set of sheets per bed and one set of towels per person (hung on pegs in the bathroom). Any extra linens for emergencies or guests go in a plastic container on a chrome storage rack in the basement.

We store beach towels, as well as all dry swimming suits, in open plastic bins in a main floor closet for easy access during the summer. (During the winter we put winter scarves, hats, mittens, etc. in open plastic bins in this space. We also store most of our shoes and even a variety of socks in this closet.)

I think what has helped us avoid clutter the most is only having out what we are actually using.

Thanks all for some ideas.  We only really have one set of sheets per bed anyway, and it’s kind of a pain.  We have more towels than that, yet never seem to have enough…sigh.  I might try tubs under the bed or using tops of closets.

I cannot use my basement to store anything – damp, moldy, mildewing and disgusting.  That is where my washer/dryer is, though.  I don’t have a laundry room.  My attic is a possibility for off season items such as bigger blankets or beach towels, it’s just the tub and the doing of it.

    thanks!

We don’t have a linen closet at all.

We have one of those racks that hangs over the back of the bathroom door, where we hang one towel for each person.  Swimming towels and a couple of extra bath towels are in a cupboard under the bathroom sink.

Sheets for the beds are in storage under the beds.  Extra blankets are stacked on the shelves in the bedroom closets.
