Yes! Especially if you will use them for more than one child. I’ve tried every style there is, almost every brand:) I use craigslist sometimes, but http://www.diaperswappers.com is wonderful. It’s a bit hard to navigate at first, but there are great deals on there in every category of diaper, and the forum is a wonderful place to ask questions.
It all depends on how much you want to spend, and what style/how many steps you want to take with laundry/folding/putting on the child, etc. I personally ended up liking just prefolds or inserts inside a cover, that way I can re-use the cover multiple times before washing, instead of an All-in-one that needs washed after one use. My favorite covers are Diaper Safari one-size and Blueberry Coveralls. Prefolds are super easy to fold into thirds, then just lay inside the cover, snap it or velcro the cover and that’s it. We used them part time for all 3 kids, usually when we were at home except for one nighttime paper diaper. Longer fr the first child and less for the next 2. They work better than paper for the first 6 months or so. I’m expecting another baby in two months and if I thought I could keep up with the laundry I would start out with cloth again. Washing doesn’t bother me, it’s just one more thing that needs to get done, yk? I usually used prefolds for the newborn stage, and then pocket diapers after that because they are trim/thin.

We use Bum Genius. The ones I have are pocket diapers but I would like to sell them and get the freetimes so I don’t have to stuff diapers anymore. For a new born we have 24, and you need that many. Now that my daughter is almost 1 we really only need 12.

I used Fuzzi Bunz for all my 4 kids with big insert. I never bought the small ones, my babies all grew very fast so it would not have been worth it for me. The Large I found too big even w/chunky baby.

Yes! I love cloth diapers for the kids.
I prefer to keep it simple, cotton, and prefolds and flats. I get frustrated stuffing pocket diapers. Fitteds are nice too. I like cotton because it is easier to wash long term, fewer stink issues. Green Mountain Diapers is my favorite, and they have great pictures and information.
I like diaperpin.com because diaperswappers overwhelms me.
My 2 youngest have only worn cloth, so much more comfortable for their little bums

I second Green Mountain Diapers! The prefolds there are really nice.
BumGenius covers are great. I personally prefer snaps to velcro, the snaps don’t snag on anything in the wash and they hold up better long-term.
I used to think all-in-ones and microfiber pocket diapers were great, until they got buildup on them that made them smell, that I could NOT remove no matter what I tried… I switched to fleece liners I cut from cheap polar fleece to keep baby bum dry at night. If they start to smell like ammonia after awhile, I ditch them and make new ones.
Wool is AMAZING if you don’t mind the handwashing… it doesn’t have to be washed frequently, as the lanolin in it is self-cleaning. It’s especially nice at night or if baby gets a rash, as it is absorbent and breathable.

Yes, I highly recommend them. I have also used many brands / styles. My daughter developed a contact dermatitis to any of the ones with polyester linings so I had to switch to ones with all natural fibers. My # 1 favorite that we all grab for the most are the BumGenius Elementals which are adjustable one-size diapers with a super soft & absorbent, organic cotton lining. No stuffing required. It’s as close to putting on a paper diaper as you can get. Lol We have the snap closures which I love so much more than the aplix closure. I’m on kiddo # 2 with the same stash in he is 26 months and they still work great. There are holes in the cotton but, it does not affect the performance in the least. I know they have since redesigned the Elementals to make them better and less likely to get holes. My 2nd favorite are the Flip Covers with snaps with the organic cotton insert. For bedtime I love using these covers with an additional hemp or bamboo insert since it’s a super absorbent fabric. The flip covers work great with prefolds as well… No need for pins or snappies. The cover holds it perfectly in place. This will be one of your more economical (yet, still user friendly) ways to do cloth. I had some Thirsties covers for my son (one with an owl print and one with trees & black birds…SO cute). I LOVED the inner leg gusset but, I wish they made them one size instead of having to buy 2 sizes and I wish the tabs were stretchy like the ones on Flip & Bum Genius. But, I still liked them a lot. I have purchased from Cotton Babies, Kelly’s Closet, Diaper Swappers & Amazon.

Wow! Y’all have me spinning! I don’t know what pre-folds are and stuffing diapers? What?
I am by no means a new mother, but we are expecting a sweet surprise next spring. I always wanted to try cloth with my oldest two, but just followed the path of least resistance. I guess with age, and experience, I’m trusting my motherhood instincts a little more!
I will be researching the information you all shared. I thought it would be more simple. My mother used cloth diapers, diaper pins, and pastic pants for me. I guess we’ve come a long way since the seventies!!

You can keep it as simple as you want to. I like flats pad folded (just a rectangle of fabric) in Flip covers. Green Mountain Diapers is my #1 place to buy from because their CS is so wonderful. I also greatly prefer pins to Snappis when I do fold and fasten a diaper on. I had some pretty decent injuries to myself thanks to Snappis, but the worst a pin can do is a single stick (I had a snappi shred my palm one time, it got stuck inthe carpet when I went to pick it up).
Oh, and there are a lot of other benefits to flats – they are cheap (relative to any other cloth diaper, and pay for themselves quickly), easy to wash, can take a beating, are multipurpose, and when you’re done with them they can be house rags! I have used them for bibs, burp cloths, sun shades, paint smocks, kid aprons, pee pads in the car seat of a potty training child, bandanas for pretend play, blankets, nusing cover ups, snot rags, etc. The list could go on and on!

Simple works well! Plain ole prefolds and covers for the first several months will work just fine. There is no reason to do anything fancy or spend tons of money. With our first we bought 3 dozen prefolds and one or two small covers in a couple different brands to see which we liked best. Then we knew which brand of cover to get when we needed the next size up.
