Ok so I order a lot from Amazon, but not necessarily the same things or on a regular basis.  I don’t really understand what Amazon Prime is.  Could someone explain it and why or who it’s a good fit for?

    Thanks Misty

I love Amazon Prime.  The free shipping is great, but we also use it for the Fire TV stuff to get shows, rent movies easily, and search for documentaries.

    It encompasses a few things.

    1. Free 2 Day Shipping – Many many many products are FREE to ship. This doesn’t apply to used books, but most everything else counts.

    2. Prime Video – Similar to Netflix, they have streaming of tv and movies for free.

    3. Prime Music – Ad free access to over 1 million songs to play/listen to.

    4. Prime Photos – This is new, free storage in Amazon Cloud.  (Online storage)

    5. Prime Early Access – They have Lightning Deals each day that are limited in quantity and you get access to the sale 30 minutes early.

    6. Kindle Books – Choose 1 featured early release book for free every month.   Also borrow 1 Kindle book free from about 500,000 titles each month.  (Note, borrow, not keep.)

We use it mainly for shipping and video.  Free shipping for us really is the best part as we get a variety of things online (some medical supplies for Mason, diapers/wipes, birthday/Christmas gifts, books, etc).  I’m not joking – 48 orders in the last 6 months.  Their prices are often better than in a store for things (and I keep a wishlist of items so I can check for sales easily.  For example I have some gift items I would like to pick up for kids by Christmas and when I check my wishlist it tells me if something’s price has gone down and how much.).  A few recent examples of things I bought that were good deals:

    – The blender jar for my Blendtec finally broke after more than 1000 uses (the machine keeps track).  I got the new jar for $54 instead of $99.

    – There was a one day deal for Prime members only on 1 box of huggies diapers and 1 box of wipes for 50% off.  I got a giant box (remember, I have two in diapers and #3 in diapers will be born soon) of each and spent $27 total.

    – Baby swing for the new baby for $99 instead of $160.

    – 3000 sheets of paper (6 packs) for $15.

It isn’t for everyone, but we love it and have had it for years.

Thanks.    We don’t have unlimited internet so the TV thing wouldn’t work :-(, and not many of the other things interest me.  I order a lot of things and if it was just the shipping alone would you do it? I order almost weekly trying to get to the free shipping with orders over a certain amount.

I would do it just for the shipping (we did that for a while before they started adding the streaming video, music, etc.). Many of the items I buy are $5-10 and it saves me so much time not having to drive to Walmart or Target. It’s nice to skip the big box store trips so I don’t buy anything extra too. I really only do two shopping trips to the grocery store a week (one big one and one for fresh produce and milk/eggs). Also, I love being able to read reviews and make better choices about buying quality stuff.

The other thing I’ll pass along is that their customer service is awesome in my experience. There are many things you can return for free (most clothes and shoes) and if there is anything at all wrong with it they’ll usually pay for the return shipping. Last night I chatted with them about some shoes I ordered, hoping they could arrive by the weekend and they upgraded me to one day shipping for free. I give their service 2 thumbs up.

    Hope that helps! Anna

I had Prime back when it was just free shipping and that is our main use of it, tho we do sometimes watch the TV part.  I’m loving the music now as I made a playlist of the composer we’re studying (Brahms) and also for our hymn study.  I also LOVE the instant gratification of getting things in two days. 🙂

Misty, they usually have free trials lasting one or two months.  I’m not sure if they are anytime or just at certain times of the year.  We started out that way and decided to continue it.

I love the Prime Music, but we don’t really watch much on the Prime TV/movies.  As far as books, I’ve been much happier with Kindle Unlimited (which is $10 per month).

We mostly use Prime for books, arts/craft supplies, pet supplies, household items, printer ink, and birthday/Christmas gifts.  You can wait until you have a $35 order, but sometimes it’s nice to order things immediately.

We live in a rural area and I think that’s been a big reason for us to continue our subscription.  It’s easier to order things online that drive 45 minutes each way when I need something that isn’t available at our local stores…not to mention the ease of not dragging 5 kids along to the store with me.  😉

One more thing that is available too is that if you opt for “no rush” shipping (it takes a few days longer), they run a promo to get $1 off an eBook or $1 off a movie rental – things along those lines. I just ordered two things tonight (separately so I could get $2 ebook credit).  They are Christmas gifts, so definitely no rush. 🙂

A few weeks ago, they had a promo (a one day only, first-time member deal) and we got our year membership for $67 instead of the $99.

So far, we’re using the movie part a lot because I’m still nit-picking hair (but, YAY! Only 1 girl each day and yesterday I found NOTHING! NO LICE of any kind!).

In the past, I always just waited until I had enough ordered to earn the free shipping…….and that was fine- there were always books on my wishlist, you know? But I think now that we’re Prime members we’ll get our money’s worth by me not padding our orders……that and we’re enjoying  our family movie nights more, with more options (we didn’t have cable or anything like that before getting Prime).
