Decided to put this question in here since it’s specific to high school….  Since Notgrass Exploring Government is recommended for Module 6 high school, I was wondering if Notgrass World History would make a good go-along with Modules 1-3?  I’d be spreading it out over 9th & 10th grades.  Has anyone tried something like this?

I haven’t seen their World History course yet. Anybody else?

I have used it as a supplement to other things.  Biblically it is excellent, however as with most texts there is not enough meat, and that is to be expected because you are covering such a vast subject.  It is a very interesting course and well written –  the book of original sources is also excellent that comes with it.  I cannot however speak to whether or not it would work with the specific modules because I don’t have those. There website has a sample chapter and table of contents you can look at though.  We are also using the Exploring Government as a supplement to our other reading as again it is a wonderful read – with history though I prefer a lot of different sources and cannot make myself use just one.  Everything we have read though is really interesting and put over in a very student friendly way.

I am using Notgrass world history alone this year and it has been fine thus far, it does have room for you to add books if you desire.

Thank you, ladies, for your replies.  Hoping someone else who’s used Notgrass can add more info….

I like all the Notgrass history books.  Notgrass is written by one man who is passionate about what he writes.  It is written in a conversational way.  This all defines what Charlotte Mason is about.  I believe by definition, it would not be twaddle.  I have found this with all their work.

I always liked the look of the Notgrass books.  I especially like  “In Their Own Words”because it has writings of famous people.  Sadly my son’s didn’t like it as much as I did. They used the world history curriculum in 9th and 10th grade as the spine in the My Father’s World curriculum. They read many other books with it but felt that Notgrass was mostly Biblical history. Maybe it’s what was said previously about it not being meaty enough. My son’s already had a good grasp on Biblical history and were looking for more info on the rest of history – but history is one of there main strengths and interests. I’m sure it’s very much just a preference. Things have to be pretty interesting to please my boys!

How would you compare Notgrass World History to Mystery of History? I’ve been torn between the two. Either spread Nutgrass out over a couple years and beef it up with living books, or use MOH as a spine and beef that up with living books.
