I realize this is not a CM approach to math but thought some of you would have a few ideas. We are currently using Abeka arithmetic for K and 1. I teach it with concrete objects, and cross off and add to fit the child. I like it, its traditional, it gets done, and the kids like the animals and little pictures:) However, my close friend says Abeka has holes and Bob Jones is much better. She has taught for many years in Christian school so I don’t want to ignore her. But, Bob Jones appears to have a more progressive (for lack of a better term) view of math. For example a focus on “conceptual understanding” and waffling about common core which concerns me. Of course I make sure my child knows why we “carry” a ten ect but that’s not the focus (and doesn’t really take that much effort). Do you ladies have any thoughts?

Since you lean towards traditional math, it’s ok to use Abeka for your main text. I would supplement with real life math and/or other supplements that are conceptual.  The whole point of conceptual is to create good mathematical reasoning so that your child has good, real life math understanding and skills.

We recently switched to Christian Light math.  It’s more traditional, so I generally add a manipulative to new concepts they are struggling with.  My 2nd grader just had carrying/regrouping, and I could tell she wasn’t quite getting it.  We pulled out our MUS blocks (base 10 bocks would have worked too) and went over a few problems in the book using the blocks.  For fractions, we had a chat about pizza slices and she understood it much better.  😂

If what you are using is working, then stick with it. No reason to switch because of someone else’s opinion or there are no problems. 🙂
