So my DD5 will be doing 1st grade next year. She really struggles with paying attention during reading aloud. We are reading through the Little House on the Prairie books (currently on the 2nd) but as I look at different options for 1st grade history I don’t think she will grasp or enjoy any of them yet. So is it OK to not do history in 1st grade? We definitely do/will do Bible and the 3 R’s. We do nature study and I do read some living science books to teach science. Just want to make sure it’s OK to wait on history. Obviously she is getting a bit of history exposure with LHOP.

It is totally okay not to do history then, you know your child best.  However at that age some of my girls liked the old historical American Girl books (not the newer ones released in the last 5 or so years). Or something with really short sections like American History Stories (four volumes free for kindle).  Or picture books!

We’re in the same boat with attention challenges so we used “A Picture Perfect Childhood” as a resource for picture books. It has a few different options like a monthly selection to include historical, seasonal, math, music, etc Or there are world or US picture books. These have been plenty for us to spread the feast! Most are at the library too! My dc 7, 6, 3 all listen to them.

You do not have to have a big spine to follow. You can always grab a few picture books from the library, too. They range from Greek Myth retold to all kinds of American history, biographies, and famous people such as inventors, world leaders and other important people. She won’t have to sit so long to still be learning something from history. 😉 Familiarity with these people through picture books can actually help them later when they are studying history more formally.

ETA: I really like A Picture Perfect Childhood. Such a help in spreading the feast for children through picture books!

I’m following the section titled, “A Picture Perfect Education.”  It breaks it down into monthly books under the following categories: -General to include historical, biography, seasonal

    -Art

    -Music

    -Poetry

    -Science/Nature

    -Language Arts

    -Shakespeare

    -Math

    -Geography

    -Fairy Tale

    -Myth

    -Tall Tale

There have been so many great reads!  We read one yesterday called “A Packet of Seeds” and it made me cry.  The other sections in the book are: Teaching Virtues through Books, A B Seeds of Reading…I have to run my dd 3 is sick!
