Hi everyone – I’m going to start implementing CM into our homeschool (my son is 11 1/2) but I’m wondering about getting the books we need……it’s a little overwhelming to me right now and money is very tight…..I want to do the Gen – Deut Bible study, possibly the 106 days of creation, and wondering if there is anyone out there who already has the needed books for these they want to sell 2nd hand???  Or any other advice would help too!  We’ve been thru a very very hard year as my husband is an alcoholic and almost died….he went to treatment, but is starting to drink again, so we are a little behind in some subjects because it was just survival for us this year.  Thank you in advance for listening!  God Bless You!

I went through the resource lists and checked to see what’s available at our library, and I’m buying the books we need 1 term at a time. I’ve had wonderful luck finding used titles at http://www.abebooks.com. They had the 101 Great Science Experiments for just under $4 with free shipping, and I bought a few books for the Middle Ages Study Guide that came to under $19 – they would have been over $36 at amazon.

God bless you, sweetie, for what you are doing for your son. Smile

Feel free to substitute other books from your library if the resources listed are not available.  I am sure there are other science experiment books or online resources you could use instead of the one listed.  I was able to do that for books I did not want to purchase but I couldn’t get through inter library loan.  Same thing with videos that were recommended.  Both Gen-Duet and 106 Days are very flexible.  God bless

I get everything at the library. If they don’t have the exact book, they usually have one like it. For Gen-Deut, we read those chapters from the Vos Bible (Child’s Story Bible), which my library has too.

Thanks for the tip on abesbooks – I’d never heard of it and I just got FOUR of the books I’ve been wanting for $16 – AMAZING!

JJSMama – I am purging a lot of books right now and handing them over to the Salvation Army – what do you actually need, I don’t have Sonya’s books, but if I had any subject that might help you I would gladly send it.  If you tell me subject matter and type of book I can see what I have got.

You are doing a good thing for your boy and you are in my thoughts and prayers.  Let me know soon, because the truck is picking them up on Thursday.  I may be able to help with something.  Linda

You could also try paperbackswap.com.  I’ve been having exceptional success getting books through them.  It’s a trading system and it’s been working very well for us.

Hi – thank you to everyone who has responded and for the support!  I really could use it right now!  What an awesome bunch of people here!  The books I was looking for were: Considering God’s Creation, any living science books, Jr. Analytical Grammar, Spelling Wisdom Book 2, any Prudence and the Millers books or character development books, any missionary books, like Heros of the Faith series, Boy of the Pyramids, Exodus or the Numbers book, Pyramid by David Macaulay, Letters from Egypt by Mary Whately, Then and Now Bible Maps, Uncle Josh’s Outline Map book or CD by George and Hannah Wiggers, The True Story of Noah’s Ark by Tom Dooley, The Cat of Bubastes:  A Tale of Ancient Egypt by G.A. Henty, a commentary for children by Nancy E. Ganz, any Chronicles of Narnia books, rascal, the railway children, any books on nature study or living science books, hours in the out-of-doors, any books on picture study, composers, and music study.

Sorry the list was so long!  🙂  Actually any living book that an 11 year old boy would be interested in would be GREAT!  We plan to do the Gen – Deut. Study this year.

Even though things are sort of day-to-day given our home life, I’m just trusting God in ALL things and I know He will take care of us through it all.  Sometimes the enemy tries to paralyze me with fear, but I have to just keep confessing the Word of God and know that HE is my perfect bridegroom!

Ladies, thanks so much for taking the time to read this and for the help and encouragement!  May God Bless You a 1,000 fold Sonya and all ladies on here for your ministry here unto our precious Lord and Savior, JESUS!

    Here are some free options:

    • Pyramid by David Macaulay – Your local library probably has this one
    • Uncle Josh’s Outline Maps – You can just Google “blank outline map Africa” and print one of the image results instead
    • Cat of Bubastes – is available free on gutenberg.org

Praying this for you right now: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

I believe Rascal and the Narnia series can be found at the library.  Hopefully you are able to utilize your library and if they offer Inter Library Loan that would help, as well.

God bless you. And I agree, the ladies on this forum are amazing!

I second the recommendation of the library!  I am SO blessed to have a fantastic library system with generally superfast interlibrary loan response…but I found out I did quite by accident.  I kept searching for things on a whim and they popped up.  My husband asked, why do you keep saying “WOW!”  one night during my searching.  So I share this with you, to encourage you to check your library.  If nothing else you can preview the books and decide if you want to make the investment.   Obviously it won’t work for all, but hopefully some!! 🙂  Prayers for you.

I will look through my stash and see what I have this week.  Sadly I know some of them I don’t have or I have and am keeping for posterity sake for my girls – however a lot are available at the library and on free sites.  If I find anything in my give aways that I might think you will like, I will contact you.  Linda

Their are multiple living science/nature books are free on BAldwin online for your son’s age; look under, nature stories and science. For a synopsos of the books, go to Yesterday’s Classics  (the nature section-http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/catalog/displaycatalog.php?catalog=nature) and then find them for free at Baldwin Project:http://www.mainlesson.com/displaybooksbygenre.php

Please, browse around the Baldwin site as you will find so much of what you’re looking for and I also recommend using the library for Narnia series, railway series and books for composer/art study. You can check out the books of art from the library as well as download them onto your computer and even print them out for picture study; what I do though is look for calenders of the great artists, they’re cheap and at walmart for the cardboard backed reproductions. ALso, classical music should be able to be checked out at thelibrary but you can also get that online. There’s a free Classical KIds site that sends you a free story and bio in the email for that one for the month:http://www.classicsforkids.com/

Keep your eyes peeled at library sales and used bookstores for the Miller series and some others like that. I would recommend asking relatives for help to purchase the creation based books (or any other gift cards for Amazon.com, that’s what I do!) as they will not be found at the library and he needs that reinforcment as he gets embattled from the culture. Ask for special books at his b-days, too. I’ll look to see if I have something on your list. Also, if you’re around other homeschoolers, ask about borrowing, I have 2 friends that we borrow from each other.

    HTH,

    Rachel
