New Picture Study Portfolios sneak peak

Mine arrived last week and they are terrific! I can’t wait to use them.
Please don’t take this as a complaint, but I am hopeful that the next bunch to arrive will be better for those new to picture study, something that will really draw the kids in. I would love to use them with our CM co-op in the fall when we add Fine Arts to our schedule. However, for many families, picture study will be brand new and while these choices would be fine with my kids, they aren’t what I would choose for getting started. Again, I hope you can hear my heart and that I don’t sound like a whining child who didn’t get her way.

I have a couple questions that I’m sure are answered somewhere but not where my eyes are!:)
1. What besides the pictures comes with the Portfolios?
2. How long is the idea that the portfolios would last? Each one for 6 weeks?
Yes, I would love to see more, also the music one would be a great idea!
As always SCM you amaze me. I do wonder sometimes how you school and are able to run a home and still find time to make OUR lives easier? Do you sleep? LOL Misty
@missceegee, Those are great suggestions. Thanks! We’re trying to provide a good mix of artists across different time periods, different styles, some that may be familiar, and some that may stretch you into new territory.
1. What besides the pictures comes with the Portfolios?
Beside the eight art prints, you also get a handbook with an artist biography (appropriate for all ages), suggested resources for further study, ideas for discussion, information about each piece of art, quotes from Charlotte Mason’s about why and how to do picture study, and instructions for how to use the materials. Each portfolio also comes with a really nice, sturdy envelope to keep everything in.
2. How long is the idea that the portfolios would last? Each one for 6 weeks?
There are eight art prints and we suggest choosing your six favorites and doing one each week. Of course, you’re free to do all eight or to enjoy a print for longer than a week if you’d like.

Keep in mind that we all have older children now. They’ve been raised on a CM-style education and we (and you) are now reaping the rewards. They help with some of these projects and help keep our households running smoothly too.
The portfolios are wonderful and the prints gorgeous…are you planning more artists in the future? Even though the girls are almost done with school, these are valuable enough for me to purchase and hold onto for the future. Thanks for making them available, picture study has become far simpler now. Linda
That is fantastic, they are a huge benefit to the CM curriculum and with these you can do as much or as little as you want. For older students you can add more reading and research and for the littles, it is a perfect set up. I cannot speak highly enough of these. Emily is a talented person – do we know who the next 3 will be??? Linda
Aw Doug, I agree with suzukimom, I guess you are just trying to teach us to have the habit of a patient spirit, lol. I shall look forward to it none the less. Linda
Actually, although I’d love to know – I know of lots of business reasons why you shouldn’t give out that type of information too soon…. it can cause frustrations with people impatient for it, cause problems if a change is required, etc etc.
So how many would you need to buy to do picture study for a year, figuring the 6 wk rotation that SCM suggests? Thanks Misty
Well, they suggest taking the 6 you like best from the portfolio for the artist. If you do a new picture every week, and are doing 36 weeks, then you would need 6 portfolios.
Now this last year, I did the AO picture rotation, and they only do 1 artist per term…. you display the picture for 2 weeks instead of 1. So doing it at that speed, you would only need 3 portfolios. (That said, this coming year I’m going to doing it every week… 3 of the artists will be “world” artists, and 3 will be Canadian…)
Now I think they said each portfolio has 8 pictures in it (so you can pick the 6 you like the best)… so you could do 4 portfolios, and have 4 weeks without picture study… or maybe use 5 portfolios.
Of course, maybe you do year round schooling, so have more like 50 weeks to do….
So basically, what seems like a really simple question really isn’t without more info… but I suspect you can figure it out now!

We just don’t want to disappoint anyone if we give a time or specifics and then have to later make changes because of circumstances we didn’t anticipate. It’s really important to us that we’re true to our word, and that’s much easier if we wait to make announcements until we’re ready to go.
