Still unsure which nature study to use qith my 7 and 10yo. I was looking at Mary’s Meadow Queen homeschooling nature study. But also wondering has anyone done the Hours in the Out-of-Doors study? Do i need one per student as well?

    Thank you!

    Marta

    Marta,

Hours In the Out of Doors is a parent resource not a study for students. In it Karen and Sonya have put together tons of quotes from CM on nature study along with practical ideas and tips for how to implement it. (I know this because I am reading it right now, almost done :o)

The SCM resource that would be somewhat parallel to the Queen’s resource you are looking at is The Outdoor Secrets Companion and book.

    HTH :o)

OH! So SCM does not have a family nature study that I can do with BOTH my 7 and 10 yo?

SCM does have a resource you can use Laughing.  It is Outdoor Secrets and the Companion Guide.

Yes. The Outdoor Secrets is only for 0-2 grades. I have a 5th grader.

    Marta,

One thing you could do is simply look on the Handbook of Nature Study blog for ideas for each season (go through her past posts).  We own the actual Handbook of Nature Study book by Anna Botsford Comstock, so many times we simply look things up in there as we find them (or in field guides) to learn a bit more.

What specifically are you wanting?  Are you looking for lessons, or for stories to read, or something else?  If you give us examples we might be able to give you more helpful suggestions.

By the way, I have a 5th, 1st, K, and 3 younger, so I understand trying to keep them together as much as you can!

Tristan-cute name! 🙂 I don’t know what i want…i have never done a nature study, so i don’t really know what to expect. But keeping them together is important…making it fun…a little reading…a little outdoor…a little creativity…and a little lesson. So a little bit of everything! 🙂 I want it to capture their minds…my daughter gets bored FAST if she is not doing something creative, if i am JUST READING! So I want this to be FUN…yet stimulating and informative. So that my kids grasp the concept and retain it and want more of it!

I guess i just told you what I am looking for! 🙂

Marta, I think that this may be of great interest to you:

    http://handbookofnaturestudy.blogspot.com/p/outdoor-hour-challenges.html

She seems to have covered all your bases.  If you look at the sidebars, you will find free ideas, and if you wish, you can purchase a set of challenges to get you started.

I would also recommend the above blog for you, but don’t neglect just getting outside and being observant. It really needn’t be complicated.

The science curriculum “106 Days of Creation” also have weekly nature studies suggested through-out the entire book.
