Hello, I’m just beginning narration with my 6 year old. I’d like to be studying history as the topic we work toward narrating. I would like to use Story of the World by Susan Bauer. Has anyone ever used that book for beginning narration? If so, how did you go about it? If not, what living books on history might you recommend?
totheskydearParticipantYou narrate the same way no matter what book is used.
cyntheburb1ParticipantYes. I’m just concerned about splitting it up paragraph by paragraph at the beginning. She’s never done this before, so I’m concerned about the chunks of reading being too large for her starting out but if I break it down into paragraph by paragraph as is suggested for first time narrations, it won’t make as much coherent sense.
MonicaParticipantIn my opinion, Story of the World is too advanced for a 6YO beginning narration. We’ve typically begun with Aesop’s Fables, Beatrix Potter, or something similar.
However, if you’d prefer to begin with history, perhaps some biographies geared towards children, like the ones by the D’Aulaires or Jean Fritz.
cyntheburb1ParticipantThanks – that was my concern too. I was wondering – do you know of any living books that introduce the concept of history? I have some picture books that we can use for Ancient Egypt, etc, that would probably work for intro to narration, but I’d love to have one just starting out on the concept of history.
totheskydearParticipantDerp! I totally misunderstood the question! Haha
