Hi there,
I have been looking over some of the old threads for high school literature Must Reads, but I’d like a more current thread of literature books that were favorites/must reads.
My ds is going into the 11th grade and will be reading:
John Adams (for history)
Frankenstein
Emma
The Chosen (I just ordered The Promise)
David Copperfield (currently reading)
To Kill a Mockingbird
I don’t have any C.S. Lewis on my list or Tolkien. He has attempted Tolkien but just isn’t interested (we could try again:).
Reading is not his all time favorite thing to do, but he doesn’t complain, either. I have Silas Marner, Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, The Importance of Being Earnest sitting next to me but I haven’t decided on any of those just yet.
We are reading the Moody books for family read aloud, as well.
Thanks in advance.
my3boysParticipantMaybe another Dickens??
Thanks.
MrsBParticipantLast year my son loved The Scarlet Pimpernell, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Stories of King Arthur, Les Miserables, Pearl Maiden, and Animal Farm. Those were his favorites. He read others, and liked him, but these were the ones he talked a lot about.
HollySParticipantI don’t have HSers yet, but here are some on my list for future consideration:
- CS Lewis books: Mere Christianity, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, etc.
- How To Read a Book
- Grammar of Poetry (I think there is a DVD to go with this now)
- The Fallacy Detective
- Sherlock Holmes
There are lots of well-loved short stories too…O. Henry, Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, etc.
my3boysParticipantThanks, ladies. I have ordered some of these and had some on my bookshelves. And, some he’s already read.
Anyone else?
Should I be considering Nathaniel Hawthorne?
sherazParticipantI read The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne in HS (twice) and once in a college lit class, and while it isn’t my favorite Hawthorne book, I learned quite a bit about human nature. 😉
retrofamParticipantThe Hiding Place, Hinds’ Feet on High Places, The Pilgrim’s Progress, Up from Slavery.
