Hi there!  I am wondering which is better to teach first to my Kinder and 2nd grade boys: rhythm or notation?  I am leaning towards rhythm, but not sure.  Or is better to do them simultaneously?

We will be using Penny Gardner’s recorder method, but I thought it might be nice for the boys to have a little familiarity with rhythm/notation first.

Also, any suggestions for best ways to teach them?  I found some great rhythm cards at laytonmusic (dot) com.

I’d suggest they experience the rhythm first  – then notate it.  I’d use pictures first, then stick notation, then real notation.

Beth’s Music Notes (Bethsmusicnotes.blogspot.com) has some great ideas.

I agree – notation should be introduced when they are familiar with rhythm and tonal patterns.  Another resource (although maybe a little technical if you’re not a musician yourself) is  http://thewayschildrenlearnmusic.wordpress.com/ .  The author addresses rhythm musicianship for the first grade in this post: http://thewayschildrenlearnmusic.wordpress.com/2014/01/12/rhythm-musicianship-first-grade/
