I began a curriculum with my son for Kindergarten and continued for 1st grade. However, it is just not working for us this fall. I have always been more drawn to a Charlotte Mason approach. My son is currently 6 1/2 years old. I have ordered some new materials from SCM and super excited to begin doing things differently. I am just assuming that we can pick up with our new material now in November and keep moving forward, which means we may now end Grade 1 next November. I am learning that I do not have to fear ‘being behind,’ but I just wanted to understand if this is the best route to go or if anyone has any other suggestions from your experiences. Thanks so much.

Yes, just start.  It will work itself out.  Welcome!

Thanks! I just need to hear it! Did you ever specifically plan a time to ‘start’ and a time to ‘end’ each year or did it just naturally fall in place and was different each year and with each kid depending on the pace that you go. I feel like I like to have things mapped out because it helps me to be more intentional, but yet I also want to work at his pace.

Tina, I’d just continue with the next lesson until you finish the curriculum, even if it’s in the middle of the year.  Grades 1-3 overlap quite a bit, so you can just keep going with where you left off for the following school year and not really worry about their grade level.

When people ask what grade my DC are in, we just go with where they would be placed for public school based on their birthdays.  For schoolwork, they are placed in whichever level fits best, even if it’s not in their age-based grade level.

I plan most of our subjects ahead of time, but have chosen to record math  “after the fact”.  It’s so hard to judge how long they’ll need on each math lesson.

We are pretty much year round homeschoolers, which simply means we take our ‘summer break’ any time it fits, for however short or long we need (a week here, a few days there, a month when the baby is born, etc).  With that, I have chosen to set an official ‘end of school year’.  For us, it is the end of May, when our kids take standardized tests (not all kids do this, but it is one reporting option in Ohio so mine do.  Waste of time but so easy to check off the list).

In reality though, my kids begin new books/levels as needed.  So already this fall I’ve had one child finish the last five weeks in a math curriculum and start the next level, while another child will likely finish their math level in Feb and start the next one.  We don’t worry about it, it all works out.

Can I just say that I already love being a part of this community! Your thoughts help to make things a little more clear in my mind. Thank you!

I am slowly moving to SCM guidelines.  The one issue I am having problems with is not starting grammar until age 10.  I have looked at the World Book curriculum guide for 1st and 2nd grade and grammar is recommended in 1st and 2nd grades.  I know I need to get out of the public school mindset, but it’s hard for me to decide what I should be teaching my son at this point.  Age wise, he is a 2nd grader.  I personally think that at 7 a child should know what nouns, verbs, adjectives and etc. are.  Am I making too much of a big deal out of it?  Any suggestions?
