Could I get a few more opinions on some more books I found in my organizing?  Some of them I just don’t remember, and others I’ve never read.  Thanks for your help!  Saves me some time reading them all myself.  Tongue out

    Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary

Greater Than Angels by Carol Matas

Memories of Summer by Ruth White

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

Henry Huggins is great! Nothing offensive. Henry is all boy, but not mischevious by today’s standards. The most trouble he gets into usually involves his dog.

i loved Bridge to Terabithia.  it has one offensive word in the or second chapter, but for an older middle schooler or young highschooler, i think it’s a great story.  really heart wrenching.  could maybe even be used to start some character trait discussions!

I remember enjoying Roald Dahl’s books as a child, but if I am recalling correctly, I think some of the themes and humor in some of his books could possibly be a bit inappropriate, depending on the ages of your children and your standards.  Even if you don’t have time to read everything you hand your children, I would suggest reading some of his ahead of time to see if they would be appropriate for your family.

I do second Henry Huggins (and any others by Beverly Cleary) and Bridge to Terabithia (for older children though – as MamaWebb suggested.)

The Henry Huggins series is wonderful.  It’s charming, and Henry is portrayed as respectful, industrious, and fairly responsible.  Karen, you are right, it is Henry’s dog Ribsy that gets into all the trouble.

I was just reading from “Henry and Ribsy” to my son at bedtime tonight, and my 12yo daughter came out of her room to peer at the front cover.  Then she grinned and said, “I thought I heard you say ‘Ribsy!'”  Of course, she asked to stay and listen.  This series is a family favorite.

Henry Huggins is a little out-of-date, since it was written in 1949, nonetheless the general impression and character of the story is pretty much everlasting. I love Henry’s adventures & his crazy dog, Ribsy. I remember nearly every one of Henry’s pranks and adventures and I read these books 15 years before.

I just wanted to chime in about Henry Huggins, just so you are aware. We used it as a read aloud, but I wouldn’t let the kids read it on their own because of the language and how some of the characters spoke to each other.  Nothing super bad – but my kids would be in a whole lot of trouble if they talked like that to one another.  That being said – we all loved the Henry Huggins series.  And it may be fine for your kids depending on how strict you are with stuff- just wanted you to be aware of it! 🙂
