We have been doing Module 2 for 6 weeks. We are enjoying it. Our problem is with the book The Golden Fleece. I have a 10 and 8 year olds that are doing most of their work together. The 10 is a little bit behind in things and the 8 year old gets things quickly. So I decided to meet in the middle and work from there. We are on week 6 and we are so far behind in The Golden Fleece. They both look at me with glazed eyes. They have yet to narrarate well. So we never get through the assigned reading. Should I drop the book? Do I need to move down to 1-3 level on the entire module? Thank you for your opinions!

    Tonya – a few questions:

    1. Is this their first year narrating?  If so then don’t be surprised if they struggle narrating – it is hard work!  Maybe read a shorter selection before asking them to narrate.  So if you have been reading a whole chapter then asking them to narrate, try reading a few paragraphs or pages, then ask for a narration from one.  Read a bit more and ask for a narration from the other child.

    2. I wouldn’t drop the whole level, though you could try pre-reading the next few titles for the level you’re doing to see if they seem too hard for your two.

    3. How are you “behind” in the reading?  I’m guessing you’re using the SCM handbook for that module, which gives you a schedule?  Take it slow, there is no rush to finish the whole curriculum in 9 months.  Also they have a few ‘makeup days’ built in to the end of each term with no assignments.

In the end you’ll just need to go with your gut, you’re the mom!

Thank you for your response! They have been narrating for three years. They are just struggling with this book.  Yes we are using the SCM handbook so that is where I feel behind. I struggle with this feeling ALL the time! I think that is another post 😉 I wish I could be more relaxed with our schedule. I just can’t figure out how that looks.  If I take longer than 9 months for each module then how will my 13 year old finish in 5 years to “graduate” by 18? It all stresses me out. Cry Thank you for your help.

    Tonya,

One option to help him still finish in 5 years is to not take summers off from history.  After all, we want our children reading all summer long anyway, right?  That gives you 15 extra months (3 months of summer per year).

It does sound like the book just isn’t a good fit for your kids if they’ve been narrating that long already.  There is nothing that says you have to finish a book (other than the mommy guilt we all get, right?).  I say drop this book, find something to use in it’s place on the same topic, and then just move on!

I am doing Module 2 and we are doing Hawthorne’s Wonder Book. My son is 12 and struggles some in reading. It is challenging so I break it up and I read a few pages and then he reads. We go quicker this way, while retaining what we need to. Some books are just harder for him, and I hate to miss out on the recommended books because of that. So I try to plug along with him, even though there are days when I wish I could just hand it over completely! 😮

So try reading to your kids a few pages, and then have them read the next few. It helps keep everyone on track, and you won’t feel so far behind.

BTW, I do try to school at least one extra month in the summer for the Modules, as well as math. Doing this helps me feel less pressure during the year, and we can take our time more. Our schedule is pretty light during the summer, even with those two subjects I still feel like I am getting a break.
