    Hello all,

We started Module 1 today (did 5 and 6) with my two dd’s (6th and 7th).  I’m having my youngest son, age 5 1/2 (K) sit in and listen here and there so I thought I might take a look at the book suggestions for the 1-3 grade group and perhaps add some of them in sometime over the year.  I saw that other than the family read-alouds, there are only 2 books in the 1st -3rd category and I was just wondering why there aren’t a few more titles in this group?  Is there perhaps a reason, maybe something that Charlotte Mason would have suggested, that the books were fewer for this time period?

    Thanks!

Two main reasons, Lisa. First, you’re right that there aren’t a lot of good books that we would recommend for that time period and that age group. Second,we can keep the history lessons within that shorter time frame that Charlotte recommended for grades 1-3 (15-20 minutes max.) with the books that are listed for Family. Too many extras will extend their lesson times to be too long. Short with plenty of time to ruminate is what we were going for.

I really like some of the books that used to be suggested. Some of these are out of print and would have to be bought used if you can find them within your budget allowance.

    ~Croconile

    ~Uncommon Traveler

    ~Seeker of Knowledge

~Pharoah’s Boat is okay, but it is a bit detailed for a younger child.

My dd loves all of the above and they didn’t add much time to our day when spread over the year.

My dd6 really enjoyed Archaeologists Dig For Clues (Let’s Read and Find Out Science 2).  It is a neat little book.  We actually looked at it before we started the first lesson in Mod 1, but you could use it anytime.  Of course, now she’s finding “artifacts” in the yard from previous people who lived in the house we just moved into… broken crayons, beads, legos, etc.

Thanks for the clarification, Sonya, and for the other suggestions, ladies!  He’s enjoying himself so far just listening while he plays Legos.  Today we were reading Genesis 3 and he pulled out our copy of Good and Evil so he could see their drawing of the cherubim with the flaming sword!
