Good Evening!  I am putting together our resources for next school year.  We will be doing SCM’s Modern Times History.  I will have a 3rd, 5th, and 7th grader.  I was wondering, in order to save on the amount of books I need to acquire, would anyone out there advise having all three do the 4-6 grade readings or should I have my 7th grader use the books for her grade level?  I am not concerned about my 3rd grader bumping up, but I don’t want to hold my 7th grader back if she would benefit more from the 7-9th grade books.  She is a very good reader.  Any advice?

We are doing modern times right now. We thorougly enjoy all the books!!! We are doing family, 1st-3rd and 4th – 6th books. The kids and I have learned so much and the books have been so good even as they cover sensitive topics with wars and such.

My oldest is in 5th and she has no problem reading the books and narrating to me. You know your 7th grader besr but they might not challenge her enough, but they could also be a perfect fit too.

Also if all 3 read the same book will you read aloud or will they have to shuffle the book between all 3? Right now my oldest reads those to herself and I read the family and 1st -3rd aloud to everyone.

Since younger siblings will be using the books, I see buying the books as an investment. This year as we cycle back to Ancients I only have to purchase a few books for the next level up, so far it has worked out.

I think it’s fine to combine.  We are doing Modern next year and I am switching the books around a bit to suit their interests and abilities.

Also, if you think you might get to Modern times again before graduation, many of the 7-9 books overlap with the 10-12 books.  I took this in to account with my soon-to-be 7th grader.  He’ll be going with the 4-6 books where they overlap.  If you are planning on a 4 year history cycle, this might be another reason to stick with 4-6 books for everyone.
