Next year my oldest will be in 4th grade and she is expressing a real interest in learning about modern history. My 1st grader would also be included. Have any of you studied Mod 6 with younger children? Is it wise to wait on that until they are older? I don’t seem to have the same reservations about modern wars etc as I did about ancient history. Odd, maybe. 🙂 But then again I don’t want to trouble them with topics that are much too weighty at this age. Perusing SCM’s book choices and TOC it seems like the topics are introduced gingerly.

    Thoughts? Experiences? Thank you!

I can’t give you any experienced advice, but I am planning on doing Mod 5 with a 1st grader and a kindergartener, and then Mod 6 when they are in 2nd and 1st. There are so many wonderful American history resources for these early years that I decided to bypass my concerns about ancient myths etc and do the last Mods, then go back and start at the beginning when my kiddos are in 3rd and 2nd grade and hopefully a bit better able to digest these other ideas. On our second pass (way down the road) I am planning to do the Modules in order.

I did do a similar history rotation with my older set of kids and it worked well. I found it to be more important that we covered things in a sensible way, than when exact order it happened. Timelines etc can help them put things into perspective.

    Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for replying. I don’t mind skipping out of order … I really do believe that kids to not think linearly like we do as adults when it comes to time. A timeline or family BOC works wonders I have found to help them place people and events. I’m more worried about the content of modern American history, but I suspect I can edit on the fly and find gentle books on the era ~ SCM’s selections seem quite appropriate. If anyone has used Mod 6 with littles maybe 5th grade and under I’d love to hear your weigh in, as well. Thank you!
