We’re in the Middle ages this year and I will be buying the newly updated version. I will have a 4th grader and 6th grader. With the new book list for this history rotation, would it be too much to have them read all the books listed for 1st-3rd grade on their own and me read the 4th-6th grade book list out loud to them?

    Grades 1–3
Brother Francis and the Friendly Beasts by Margaret Hodges
Castle Diary: The Journal of Tobias Burgess by Richard Platt
Marguerite Makes a Book by Bruce Robertson
    A Medieval Feast by Aliki
Pippo the Fool by Tracey E. Fern
The Sword in the Tree by Clyde Robert Bulla
Viking Adventure by Clyde Robert Bulla
    Grades 4–6
Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Janet Gray
King Arthur and His Knights audio recording by Jim Weiss
“The Pied Piper of Hamelin” poem by Robert Browning
    The Vikings by Elizabeth Janeway

I personally don’t think it will be too much.  We’ve already read a few of the books on the 1st -3rd list and they are not to be missed IMO! My 4th grader read Viking Adventure at the beginning of this school year and absolutely loved it!  Sword in the Tree is also a family favorite here.  They are easy reads.

I would read them all, if your are taking a whole year to do the study it only adds, what, one book a week. And a picture book usually at that.
