Memorize equations before moving on?

DD went really quickly through addition in MUS.  She knew her facts quite well and didn’t need to use the blocks anymore.  Now that we are getting into some harder subtraction she is not always able to do the problems without the blocks.  She understands the concept, but she doesn’t have her facts memorized for this lesson.  Should I drill her on the ones she has just learned until she has them memorized so that she can take the test without using the blocks?  I’m concerned that if we move forward that there may be some confusion once add new lessons and subtraction facts.  Or will it come with continued practice in the other lessons?

I have made flash cards for each chapter of MUS alpha.  I have made sure that my DDs can answer all the flash cards even with them mixed up without blocks before allowing them to take the test.  I have made a set of flash cards with the answers and one without the answers (2+2=4 and 2+2=  ).  At the beginning and the end of our math lesson I will have them go through 3-5 of them for the current chapter.  First we do the ones with the answers and them reading it 3x, then one time without the answers.  When they can easily do them without the answers only I add on some more for that chapter until they can go through all of them.  Sometimes we’ve had to go back and review.  I have 1 DD almost all the way done with alpha and sometimes she wants the blocks when doing something already learned, but not very often.  I have another DD 1/2 done with Beta and we are needing more review or prompting with the tricks.  Subtraction has seemed harder for her to get and keep up with.  We are taking a couple weeks just doing review and flash cards before Christmas break and trying to get a better hold on subtraction again before moving into multi-digit subtraction.  Some of it is just using it, though.

I don’t let DDs use blocks during their test at all, excpet for finding the missing number.  Once they are done with the test, if they have missed something, I will sit down and do it with them and allow them to use the blocks to find the correct answer.

Thanks, pangit!  That is what I was thinking as well – learn the facts before the test and not use the blocks for the test.  I noticed the website has some online drill, so I’ll probably do some of that as well as homemade flash cards.
