  • I hope someone can help.  My dd who is six is having trouble with her addition facts.  She was doing really well with 1, 2 and 3 families until she got to the 4 family and then she cannot remember any of the facts (except 4+1).  I keep drilling them but she just seems to guess.  We have been working on this for over a month now.  I would appreciate any suggestions to help he understand better.

My 7 year old dd is not strong on her facts either and we are working on 4’s right now too.  I would try things that cater to different learning styles.  Maybe allow her to use counters for a week (or longer) and see if she is more confident after that.  Working it out on paper with tally marks, abacus, number stories, set to music, clap and count the numbers together.  My daughter is a bugger to figure out so when we run stuck I try more physical expressions and for her, that helps her grasp things better.

Do you know someone who is either four years older or four years younger than your 6yo? My son, who just turned six, taught himself his 3’s by saying “when (sister’s name) is 4, I’ll be seven,” or whatever. Our babysitter’s grandson is four years older than ds. He has just recently started using him as a way to learn his 4s. (He came up with this on his own, BTW).
