I just found out that Math U See is Common Core aligned!  Is this something I should be concerned with?

Personally, I don’t see anything to be concerned about with common core math. If it was a different subject, I’d be more concerned.

But, that said, we use MUS and the common core is a little confusing to me. But that doesn’t make it bad. Instead of just learning to add and carry 325+ 478….they have to break it out into place values, too (they learn both ways). It’s:

    300+20+5

    + 400+70+8

And when they get to multiplying that way, it’s more confusing. But there is nothing “immoral” about it, and I love that my kids understand the math concepts doing MUS. So, we try to do it their way unless it’s really baffling for my kid, then I teach them the traditional way. 🙂

    Hope that helps.

From what I understand, MUS (and a lot of other HS curriculums) already met CC standards before they ever existed…they just added statements saying they are CC aligned so they can continue selling to schools or others who want/need that alignment.

That particular example actually has nothing to do with Common Core. It’s the way MUS has always been. They teach the how and why mathematical operations work and then eventually phase some of those details out as skills are mastered.

MUS did make changes a few years ago that allowed it to be used by those who required Common Core compliance. The changes were mostly adding extra practice problems to each section. The differences are so minor that they didn’t even change the teacher books.

The extra problems that they added are the Application and Enrichment pages at the end of the lesson practice. We very rarely do those and they are really not necessary and don’t usually add anything to what the student is learning. I say usually because there are sometimes 2 or 3 out of a whole book that I will have my kids do.

Definitely not a concern!  We also pick and choose from these…if they seem like something they’d enjoy or could use some practice on, I’ll add them in, but we usually just stick to the original worksheets as well (worksheets A through F are the original ones).

Also, the video lessons haven’t been changed at all since CC came out.

The example I gave is the kind of thing I keep seeing on FB as being CC and crazy. 🙂

I never used MUS before Common Core.

If you go to the MUS website and click here, scroll down (almost to the bottom). You will find 3 questions and answers about MUS and CC. MUS addresses concerns over CC. We’ve used MUS for 4 years and have not had any concerns.

Thank you everyone!  This was a great help!  I’m going to stay with MUS.  My children LOVE it!!  People have me so freaked out about this whole Common Core business  :/
