Has anyone used Math on the Level?  I had planned on using RightStart or Singapore with my daughter next year for first grade, but MOTL looks more CM to me…anyone tried it?  What are your thoughts on it?

    Thanks!

I have it and have used it some but not to its potential.  How many kids do you have?  And are you into doing a fair amount of prep work?  If so, it may be a good fit for you.  I’m planning to get Math U See now just b/c I held my daughter – 10 yo – back last year by not keeping up with being ready to teach.  I’m not sure – I may try to use some of the ideas from MOTL along with it, but I need the framework of a planned curriculum right now.

That said, we enjoyed the little we did and my daughter likes math 🙂  It’s a great program, it just takes a fair amount of Mom to do it unless your a born teacher, which I sadly am not.  I’m learning to teach while I do it.  You may love it!

I should have said also – it is very CM in my opinion.  Just how I would imagine Charlotte teaching.  Anyone second that thought??!

Thanks for your reply, Julie.  I’d love to hear from anyone else who has tried it too.  Right now we have three children, 5, 3, and 1.  We’d love more in the future.  MOTL seems neat for combining children.  If I used SCM stuff, as the littles enter school age, my thought was we could combine them for Bible/History/Geography, composer/art/Shakespeare/nature study, and even Math if we used MOTL.  I just love the thought!  I think I’m okay with the prep if I schedule it into my day.  I’m very schedule-oriented.  =)  How much prep did it take?  Does SCM take a lot of prep?  I may not know if I can keep up unless I try…

Anyway, thanks again Julie and if anyone else wants to chime in too, that’d be great!

I have had Math on the Level for a couple years, and I too haven’t used it to its fullest. I haven’t used it at all this year yet. I think it takes a lot of prep at the beginning. Once you get your kids evaluated, I don’t think it takes too much each day. You need to write a 5 a day paper. That’s 5 problems that cover what they already have mastered. Keep in mind that one problem can cover multiple concepts. I’m so bad at the evaluation part. It really is big on record keeping. I think once a person buys MOTL it takes a while to not feel overwhelmed by it. People who keep at it love it. I think it is a very smart program. You just have to realize that it takes a while at the beginning to get it under your belt.

I’ve had it since April and I feel the same as Julie. My dd is 5 and even though I’m not rushing her, I do feel she has fallen behind since we started because I’ve had a hard time with the “learning curve”. I still struggle with the record keeping. I understand how it works, but to me it’s too much. I don’t really care for the scope and sequence, so I put together my own scope and sequence. Those that like it REALLY like it. I’m thinking of switching math curriculum and using MOTL as a resource because it does have some good teaching ideas. There is prep work to it and that part didn’t bother me, but I did have to stay on top of it. It is very CM’ish and it may work for you. I hope this post hasn’t discouraged you, but wanted to give my 2cents….Smile

As far as the prep work goes, there is the 5-a-day paper as mentioned for each day plus a lesson and some activities to reinforce at least a couple of times a week I would say.  So, for me I’m sure that took/would take a good 45 minutes/week.  What do you think, Angela and Julie?  Then of course, there is the teaching time to consider.  Nothing is taught unless you teach it.  I had a 3 and 1 yr old last year and just wasn’t together enough to do it.  aybe I’ll try again this year…we’ll see.  But I think I’m going to have the dvd from Math U See for insurance.  I’m considering having her do a notebook page to teach me each new concept from her video and then using the activities from MOTL as I can to provide interest and experience.  We’ll see…
