I have a DD7 who has just completed Math U See’s Alpha. Although she did well, I realize she will hate math her whole life if we keep going with MUS. I was looking at Math for a Living Education, but I really like the look of the new elementary series from SCM. However, looking at the scope and sequence she would fly through almost the first 1/2 of book 1. Does anyone know when Book 2 should come out? Has anyone used both MFLE and SCM’s method and would tell me their thoughts?

Really all you need for SCM elementary math is the DVD and handbook.

The 2 DVD set shows you how to teach each math operation and gives examples and ideas for how to customize the math session to your child’s needs.  Use household items like buttons and coins for manipulatives.  Use story problems with subject matters that interest your child.  Add Strayer Upton (very inexpensive at RR or CBD) for more story problems and practice.  The handbook explains CM math methods and gives a scope and sequence.  I wish I had it when my children were that young.

I am not very familiar with MFLE.  However, you should be able to apply some of CM math methods to any math curriculum.  We are using CLE Sunrise math along with the CM methods I learned from the SCM math DVD and handbook.  It really made a difference for us improving mental math and seeing the usefulness of math.  Before, I was getting, “but when am I ever going to use this?”.

I’m trying to figure out math curriculum for my first grader. We used Math Lessons for a Living Education for my daughter’s kindergarten year this year and did NOT like it. There were many, many typos (which really bothers me). Also, we found ourselves skipping ahead lessons because much of the work seemed like busywork. She understood the concept and was bored and ready to move on. So, for her first grade year this fall, I’m considering the SCM Elementary Arithmetic book. But, I’m also a little bit worried that it will be slow and not very engaging for her. I had considered Math U See or RightStart Math, but both seem very complicated and teacher-intensive. I’m not much help, apparently, but I feel your pain! Searching for the right math program is not easy!

The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series: Book 2 is in the publishing process. Because proofreading and book layout can be a lengthy process, we don’t have a release date yet. The best “release date” we can give at this time is we hope to have Book 2 available sometime this year.

, when using any math curriculum, you should teach at your child’s pace. If your child finds some concepts easy, move quickly through those problems. If your child finds a concept to be more difficult, keep working on that concept until your child understands it.

Working my way through Richele’s book/DVD set.  Very helpful.  My question is what do I do with an 11 year old who has NOT had this formation?  Where to go from here???  He knows facts fairly well, but doesn’t like to tell me the ‘why’, so I can see advantages in backing up a bit, but how far?  What is recommended for a CM middle school aged child? (Anxiously awaiting book 2 now that I know about it!)
    Thank you!

This is not a CM math suggestion, but we enjoy Miquon and Caleb Gattegno materials.  I am supplementing with Christian Light Math.

My dd9 does not do well with CM style math. She loves to puzzle things out and work from whole to part.  She also prefers workbooks, gasp!

I’m not trying to change your mind, just sharing our experience in case it helps someone.

    Hi Debbie,
When I took my oldest back, I simply explained to him what we were doing and that –though some would be review– I need to get a handle on where he was in understanding.  I took him a bit further back than where I thought he was and let him speed through until seeing where he slowed down.  In the DVDs, I used the question “why” just as an aid to get a child to answer fully.  It isn’t really in the sense of giving a narration so, at your son’s age, you might just tell him that you would like fully worded answers (where necessary).

As far as what is recommended, do you mean a simple textbook that provides the teacher with a bank of problems while applying CMs methods?

Since he knows his facts fairly well, you might just use a few of the questions in “Intro to Multiplication” to be sure he understands that multiplication is repeated addition and what “times” means.  CM’s multiplication tables are a bit unique.  They help a child recognize patterns, utilize algebraic thinking, show division as the complement of multiplication, and take the division facts at the same time.  If you think it would help him to work through those, here is an outline I made to help.

I’m looking forward to seeing Book 2 in print, as well, as I continue to pray for the SCM team in the midst of the process.

    Warmly,
    Richele
