This morning, 12yo ds complained to me that he never gets any mail….and I know writing letters would be tough for him, so maybe a penpal wouldn’t be a good idea. However, he would probably love getting a magazine in the mail on a monthly or semi-monthly basis.
So, I’m wondering what sort of magazine would be good for him. He is mildly autistic, so he has learning and developmental delays. He reads at around a beginning 3rd grade level, but usually nothing tougher than shorter chapter books. He likes sports, some outdoors stuff, and video games (although I don’t know that I would want him reading gaming magazines!)
Does anyone have a recommendation on this? I would like something that would suit a Christian conservative family, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be published by a Christian company.

Boys’ Quest comes to mind. It’s geared for around ages 8 and up. You can view a full issue sample here:

It comes out every other month. You may also want to look at Fun for Kidz (same link). It comes out alternating months. It has a lot of hands on stuff.

We love Nature Friend and Ranger Rick (& sister mags) for the animals. God’s World News is terrific for current events and has many levels to choose from.
My ds8 loves sports, too, but I’ve not found any magazines I’d purchase.
There is a company called Cricket Magazines that publishes mags on a variety of subjects. It’s been a few ears since I’ve seen them, so I can’t give a recommendation.

All my kids, including my 13 ds, loves National Geographic for kids as well as Boys Quest.

Thanks for the link to the coupon for the Cricket mags offer – those are great magazines but $$$ due to them having no advertising. That is one of the good things about them, though. My 8yo son has a subscription to Boys Life through his cub scout troop and he does enjoy it, but it is mostly ads and product reviews. I feel the same way about National Geographic kids magazine – all ads and the content is frequently tied in to movie releases etc. Both are marketing tools more than anything else, in my opinion. Ranger Rick is better – and my older child, who is a fluent reader, enjoys the regular National Geographic magazine. The Cricket mags have several titles to choose from and several reading levels – some focus on literature and poetry, some history, some science.
On Boys Life though – you mentioned that your son likes video games – mine too LOL – and he enjoys looking at the video game reviews and ads in this magazine. He is not a good enough reader to really read it, but he tries, and he gets excited when it comes in the mail.

Thanks for all of these suggestions. Some of these (Cricket mags & Ranger Rick) are available at our library, so I can take a look at them before subscribing.
