I have looked through the forum for postings regarding LLATL, but I have been unable to find a clear answer to my question.  In your opinion, is LLATL too light and simply not enough to thoroughly cover grammar, composition, vocabulary, spelling, and literature?  Does it need supplementing?  This curriculum LOOKS good; however, a lot of the reviews regarding it are negative.

What ages are you using it with?  We used it with our fifth grader, and I actually really liked it.

Second and fifth grades.  Did you find a need to supplement with it?

I, personally, didn’t find a need for a supplement with it.  I did not have him read all the books in the book study (I just don’t think my son was really looking forward to reading an American Girl bookWink), and instead supplemented with some of the other books that they use for dictation throughout the book.

My son loved it, and is looking forward to using the next book.  My son does have ADD, so this was a good fit for him, because his attention span is not long, and it offered enough variety for him from day to day to keep him interested.  I think that this is one of those curriculums where you have to use it for  few years to get the whole picture, kwim?

Thank you for your help, Meagan!

We have used LLATL for 6 years with our oldest and 5 years with our youngest.  We have not supplemented and we have enjoyed it.  It is set up differently and doesn’t have you diagramming sentences until 7th grade.  But by then my daughter did it with ease. Her brother is very different and I have considered using some memory songs for him to help him remember what parts of speech are.  He is going into the 6th grade.  He just doesn’t remember things well as my daughter does and he needs much more one on one where my daughter was very independent.

Has anyone used the Gold LLATL for American Literature? It looks like it might be good.

I just wanted to jump back in and say that I lied when I said that I didn’t supplement.  I did add extra activities when it came to spelling.  I got their spelling words out of LLATL, but they had daily assignments (alphabetizing, writing definitions, using the words in sentences, etc.).  These were just things I made up out of my head, I didn’t use a curriculum.

I have used LLATL and will begin using it again next year with my DS.  I will be using the Gold AMerican lit. this year with my 10th grader.  IMO it is good, but I do know some people don’t think it’s enough and supplement, I may add some extra books from out history program (I tweak everything), but I have found the program to be enough for students.  We don’t do the writing in LLATL because we use IEW.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Des. I am planning to do American Literature (novels, poetry, and short stories) with my daughter this year for 9th grade because we are doing American History. I saw the LLATL Gold book just today and thought – wow – that looks like it would work really well. I would most likely add in some additional books though. 🙂
