    Hi everyone. I dont want to pop a vague question in regards to the List of habits.  I am reading the book Laying down the rails  and I am pretty sure I will have to read the version for children, something that I have not bought it yet. My question:  Is there any list of CM’s list of habits that could guide me on how to start according to the child’s age? my DD  is 4 YO and she is advanced for her age. Thanks for your time to respond to this question;

    Obedience, Attention, and Truthfulness are Charlotte’s top 3 traits and a great place to begin.

    Are there suggestions for discipline for disobeying/untruthfulness? I am awaiting my LDTR in the mail but we are dealing with some issues. DD will be 5 in Aug.

    Thanks 🙂

    Thanks Holly for your time to answer.  Yes! I am aware of the three top ones and We are working on this for a while now,  something that I read in the LDTR book.  However  I am a visual learner and I do have to print things and put it on the wall,  something that helps me to keep my motivation levels up. It would be lovely to see a suggested chart according to the child’s developmental stage ( cognitive, emotional, physical, language, social)  to introduce the other list of habits.  For example in my humble opinion I would not introduce the habit of let’s say…  Thrift at such a young age.  I hope I have expressed clearly what I mean. I wonder if Sonya Shafer has a suggested chart or if any wonderful parent here doing CM has something similar that would not mind to share with others. As I said and think it would be only a suggested thing, due to every child is different. Regards. Natura.

    Hi, Natura. It seems like the habits themselves would not necessarily be age-graduated; however, specific applications of those habits could vary according to age/developmental level. For example, you could apply the Not-Wasting-Food facet of the habit of thrift for a 4yo; an older child could focus on the application of Budgeting. With the habit of Modesty, the application for a young child might be not raising her dress over her head; an older child might need the application of spending her money on clothes that draw attention to her face, not her body. Does that make sense? The habits are pretty much consistent without regard to age, but the various applications of those habits could be personalized according to age level.

    Thanks Sonya for your answer.  However May I ask if you cover this applications of those habits according age level in the LDTR for children?  I  think it might have  a bit of a psychological point of view  those applications because they obviously relate to their developmental stage, as the clear examples you have mentioned in your answer.

    I am going to read the free sample of the new book..

    Thanks.

    Nat.

    LDTR does not contain info on specific applications of habits as they relate to developmental stages, Nat. It is mainly a compilation of Charlotte Mason’s writings on habits, and she didn’t dwell on that aspect of habit training. There are so many possibilities for applications in everyday situations, I’m not sure how one would go about making such a list while also taking into consideration the variables in each child’s developmental growth rate. Charlotte dwelt mainly on principles and ideas that we can then apply in specific situations as we educate each child as a person.
