Has anyone used this program from IEW? Is it worth the price? Is it more than I could get by just assigning poems to memorize?
It looks really amazing and I really want it, but want to know if it’s worth it.
MissusLeataParticipantAnyone?
CrystalNParticipantHi MissusLeata, I have the teachers manual, I think there is a student book also, I dont remember why I chose only the teachers manual. There isnt a whole lot to it, really. It has a great explanation of their philosophy and teaching method. The appendix has some lists of extra resources like poet biographies, extra lessons to go with the poems. The lesson enhancements include a bit of poetic elements, literary devices, geography, science. Very brief, not overwhelming – you could do a small unit study if that was your thang. That being said, I do really like it. Somehow they were able to put together selections that my children LOVE, and are easy to memorize. The theory I guess is super easy at first, building those memory muscles for more complex. I dont use any of the extras, just the poems themselves. I would buy it again just for the poetry compilation, they are fun poems. Toward the end hi gs get more serious with speeches and excerpts from Dickens, Shakespeare, Churchill, Sayers, Lincoln. We havent gotten the far yet. I hope that helps a little. The beginning poems are quite silly like The Vulture by Belloc, After the Party by Wise, and Ooey Gooey. But the kids laughed endlessly and recite the silly versus here and there still. Celery in our home now comes with a poem….
MissusLeataParticipantCrystal, that helps a lot. Thank you! We’ve done little attempts at memorizing poetry, but picking out the right poems is a bit overwhelming!
