I feel like I need a more formalized plan for Language Arts than I’ve had in past years.  Here is what is happening now … how could I improve it?  Is it enough?

Literature – I’ve got a great list of books for each of the kids.  This is set!  😉

Spelling – I’ve been using a combination of prepared dictation (goal of 3x/wk) and more schoolish reviewing, fun spelling bees, etc.  i do require them both to check all spelling before turning written work in to me.  Play more scrabble?  Make them sleep with dictionaries under their pillows and hope osmosis will occur?

Grammar – Informal instruction through their written narrations and composition work.  We did GrammarLand.  We did pieces and parts of FLL when the kids were younger.  We’ve used online and other sources for specific writing and grammar questions when working on composition.  I am going to implement a 30 minute lesson with them weekly on a particular topic – sort of fill in the blank spots.

Writing/Composition – Twice weekly composition assignments that we choose together – these cover the variety of writing styles, formats.  I teach, using a variety of sources, the concepts if needed and then set them loose to compose.  We work together as needed.  I require a planning sheet, rough draft and final copy of each piece.  They also write in a journal 3x weekly.

Vocabulary/Latin – I emphasize vocabulary and we all have a game of introducing one another to new words.  Maybe I should say a competition!  I’ve wanted to start Latin, but have not investigated the right program that will be self taught.

I’m wondering if I need to purchase curriculums and get formal about all this, or if I can do what I am doing with some tweaks.  What is the goal for college bound students?

    How old are you kids?

I have one in college. I think the goal for writing is to be able speak an use grammar correctly, good punctuation skills, be a whiz at writing essays, and research papers. My son has needed to do a power point presentation in a couple of his classes, too.

@ Missy OH – They are still young really … late elementary and then middle school.  I just wondered what some other Lang. Arts plans looked like for CM familiies.

Christie, Bookworm, Lindsey …. what do you all think?

I’d introduce Latin and build vocabulary by beginning a Latin/Greek roots notebook.  We like English from the Roots Up cards for this study.

Otherwise, I think you’ll find what you’re doing is going to provide a strong foundation for their goals.

The current SCM blogpost has links to two past posts that might be helpful.

“Simple and Effective,” and “Learning to be Content.”  Both are helpful when considering whether something needs to be added, or not.
