It is just my observation from looking at the “Grades 1-12 Overview” that the recommendations for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade language arts are not very rigorous. I think I understand the transition from grammar study (with Analytical Grammar) in 7th and 8th grade to composing research papers in 9th grade but then it just seems to drop off in 10th, 11th, and 12th. The only resource is Spelling Wisdom (along with continuing written narrations + Book of Mottoes). I do not have a child at this level (yet) but any advice on the “why” behind what is being recommended for these particular grades?
CrystalNParticipantI think the idea is that the student continues to practice the types of writing they have learned by writing in their regular subjects. The written narrations naturally become literary analysis, pursuasive essay, etc. Once they have learned how they can begin applying those styles of writing daily. I may be wrong, I am not there yet, but that is what I thought.
JamieParticipantCrystal – That makes sense but at the same time it kind of scares me. I really like more of a guide/lesson plan to lean upon. Hopefully SimplyCM will have developed more high school guides by the time we get there.
CrystalNParticipantIt scares me too! I think ULW 3,4 and 5 will be available when I need them so that makes me feel a little better.
JamieParticipantYes, I hope so too. 😀😀😀
Sonya ShaferModeratorSorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been on the road. You two already figured out the answer, though. 🙂
Those high school years are a time of practicing the application of the grammar and fine tuning their narrations. Using Language Well, Books 4 and 5, will be scheduled in there as soon as they are written. (I hesitate to put them there now, as it might cause confusion.) Both of those books will focus on composition points and give guidance for that continual encouragement and improvement of the student’s individual writing voice.
Additionally, the student will be earning literature credit through the lit. books, poetry, Shakespeare, and such included in the Enrichment studies.
CrystalNParticipantThanks Sonya. Love your new haircut. You look beautiful!
Salina FedrickParticipantHi Sonya, What do I do if my son 15 hasn’t had much grammar? I really don’t know what to do about this? Thanks.
JamieParticipantSonya – Thanks so much for the feedback.
Salina – I would suggest doing the either the 2 year or 1 year plan of Analytical Grammar. It is basically taking all the same information and condensing it into a shorter period of time.
Sonya ShaferModeratorThanks, Crystal!
Salina — I agree with Jamie. 🙂
