HI all, we are in about the 10th week of our school year and my girls are acting bored with the CM history this year. I have a hard time beefing up the history. We have twin babies that are 14 m so they keep me hoping. Any suggestions? Do any of you use Story of the World? I have a 7th grader and a 4th grader. I know about the extras but they aren’t excited about them. They love doing map work as well. Just not sure we should continue doing Modern History this year.

Jill, there are so many good books for Modern history. What years are you trying to cover? It would be easy to pick a few books for your kids to read that replace some of the SCM picks in  the history or can  go in  addition to them.

For example Esperanza Rising is a good one set in the 1930s Great Depression era where a girl and some of her family go from affluence in Mexico to migrant work in California and could fit both kids ages.

    Hi Jill,

Are you putting together your own plans?  Story of the World is a bit young for many 7th graders.  It never held my children’s attention, even in their younger years.  If you are putting together your own plan, have you looked at SCM’s history guides?  No artsy craftsy bits are scheduled (it looks like your kids aren’t excited about doing those) and map work is scheduled 1x a week.  It’s also suggested that you locate on a map the places you are reading about.  My son enjoys tracing battles, journeys, etc.
