We picked it up last year and intended to enjoy it with our Nature Study or as a lighter side of Science studies but the children (7,9 at that time) just didn’t immediately like it. When that happens I tend to shelve the book for another try later or forget about it all together. I think if we’d stuck with it maybe they would have enjoyed it more. We stopped only a dozen or so pages into it. I loved the concept and really wanted them to dive in! Maybe later …
I’d be curious to hear others comments since it seems like such a beloved book. Anyone else used it? Please share how you approached it … maybe I just didn’t get it right!
I was pondering buying this book as well. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they think it would be suitable for people in another country or if the insects are all US insects? I think Charlotte Mason used the book herself, which makes me think it should be ok for us (we’re in the UK), but I couldn’t tell from the chapter headings in the contents and the sample chapter is a katydid. It does look like such a wonderful book.
Jack’s Insects covers insects from around the world. I recall insects from England, United States, South America, Africa, Australia, China, and Mexico. My 13yo (at the time) enjoyed it.
Thanks for the replies! I will probably give this book a try sometime soon. My ds9 LOVES reading about animals and insects. We’re doing a very small Christmas this year as far as presents go, and this may be the one for him.
