My ds6 has been doing so well in school. He has always been good at paying attention, and could even give some pretty good narrations when he was 5. One thing he started doing last week though is itching. It sounds silly, but every time he sits down to do math or copywork, he is distracted from his work because he’s scratching his back, tummy, arms and face. It really is perplexing me.

I have not changed soaps, shampoos, or anything like that. Sometimes when I don’t want to sit still and do something I get itchy, but I have learned to just get over it. I’ve told him that he’s not really itching, but that he just is having a hard time getting his work done and that he needs to focus to finish his work.

I am making sure his lessons are short: 10 minutes for copywork and 15 minutes for math. Also we don’t do those subjects back to back. We do Scripture memory in between them, and he doesn’t sit at the table for that. We move to the couch. So, it’s not like he’s having to sit at the table for 25 solid minutes. I should also add that he loves both subjects, especially math.

Is there any way I can help him stop itching?? Tongue out

Could he have developed any allergies?  My son got super itchy too until we found out his allergies.  Has he been playing in anything unusual?  Such as a new place outside that has something that a little boy would think is “cool” that is not intented for children.  Or a place in the basement at your house or a friends house that possibly has something that is not meant to be played with.  ie. the pink insulation.  That stuff will make you super itchy!  I would first be absolutely (sp?) positive that he really isn’t itchy.  Then, if you find out for sure that this is just his imagination, try doing your work in a different place for a while to freshen things up a little, maybe that will help???  It does sound a little fishy to me.  Interesting what these little guys come up withLaughing

No, Linabean, he hasn’t gotten into anything unusual. It’s been bitterly cold with 6 inches of snow on the ground here, so I know he hasn’t gotten into anything outside. We haven’t bought any new clothes or bedding lately either. And I haven’t made any food that’s different from what I normally make. We live in a second-floor apartment, so no basement.

He’s only itchy during that part of the day. In fact, he’s sitting at the table in the same spot where he does his schoolwork, and he’s not itching at all. I think it’s something fishy like you said.

It’s kinda funny thoughLaughing  If you think about it!  My son once said that he couldn’t stand up or do stuff with his sisters because it felt as though all of his blood was going into his big toe!  I didn’t even know what to say to that!  Anyway, do you think it  may help to change the place that he does those subjects?   That’s the only thing I can think of right now.

Good luck with your itchy little student.  Wink

I would love to try changing spots, but unfortunately, our couch and the kitchen table are the only spots in the house we have room for school. And it would be difficult for him to write or use his manipulatives on the couch. Hmmm….

I appreciate your feedback. I was just wondering if anyone else had ever experience this phenomenon! And blood going to the big toe is hilarious!

Is he feeling uneasy about either of these subjects?  Maybe just a nervous reaction?  I don’t know…  My 6yo has extrememly itchy, dry skin this time of year because of the dry air.  I run a humidifier and use a good lotion.  But if he’s only itchy during that time, I would think it has something to do with what he’s doing.

    RobinP,

Copywork and math are probably his two favorite subjects, and he is excellent at both. We have very dry winters where we live, but he only started “itching” last week. Sometimes when I don’t want to do something or if something’s getting on my nerves, I get really hot and sometimes itchy on my legs and feet. (Weird, I know.) I wonder if it’s just his way of trying to get me to let him get out of his schoolwork?
