Is there any reason why I shouldn't do the other children's commentaries?

    Hello all =)

I will soon be using the Genesis thru Deut. and Ancient Egypt study with my children.  My oldest is 11.  I know that in the resources used are two children’s commentaries.  I am wondering if there is a reason I couldn’t do the Genesis and Leviticus commentaries as well.  Would this be too much?  They all look so good, but I don’t want to overdo it either.  Leviticus is actually listed under the 7-9th grade studies and Genesis is not included.

Just wondering what you think.  Thanks!

This is just my personal opinion…

We did the Gen-Duet this year (and loving it).  However, I found to the commentaries to repeat what you just read from the Bible…only a lot more wordy and repetitive.  There were some great insights to the scripture, but I do wonder if there might be another way to get it.  I got bored reading it.  When my kids are older I will probably make them read it the next time we do this module…but right now I have quit reading them even though we bought them both. (I also considered buying the other ones but am glad I didnt)

Agreeing with that swtonscrappn said re: repetitive and wordy.  The only one that I had purchased was the Genesis guide because I wanted to see how the girls did with it before ordering the others.  In the end, I chose not to purchase them.  However, that is just our experience.

On the other hand, this might be a good one for the kiddos to do on their own except that some of the chapters are quite long for a child who may not enjoy reading as much for one reason or another – thinking specifically of the 12 and under group. The background information is very helpful, though, and is definitely worth the study if they have never delved further into the readings than the often told versions.

For all of the above, please keep in mind that my girls are 16, 14, and 10.  Your oldest is 11, so the information in the book, though very repetitive for you, may be just what your overall younger group needs if you choose to do this together – which is my preferred method with school related Bible study.

I agree with the above posters.  I tried the Exodus commentary with my 2 girls, who were 7 and 6 at the time.  It was too much for them.  Way over their heads.  We are going to try again when we get to this module again.  We’ll see if I add in my younger 2 at that time or not, or wait with them, as well.

I guess we had a different experience. We have enjoyed them. They did get a bit wordy at times but that was easy enough to shorten. But the amount of stuff that my kids and I learned was worth it!

My oldest two (ages 13 and 14) are using the Leviticus commentary. They said they are learning from it but it too is wordy.

My 6 year old does have trouble following it but I think that’s just an age thing. My 14, 13, 10, 8 year olds are doing well.

Sorry so disjointed-very tired and spacey today!

Thanks for your replies!  I think I’ll just stick with the two for now.  =)  I can’t wait for my items to arrive!
