I feel like this is a lame question but I’m not finding my answer I need. Is copy work the same idea handwriting?  Or is this having them copy something else? Like I said I feel like this is a lame question but am trying to make up a general schedule right now for next year and don’t want to basically put in the same thing twice.

Yes-copy work is for handwriting. 🙂 It helps in other language arts areas as well but it’s main purpose is handwriting.

That’s the assumption I’ve been working under.  Now that my daughter’s cursive is nice, I figured that we’d stop with the handwriting book and do copywork instead.  I plan on using the Spelling Wisdom books and trying to work in a little spelling practice as well..

Copywork begins with handwriting, yes, but as a student’s writing gets good then copywork can be great for other things as well. We use it for grammar and dictation and spelling now that penmanship is pretty solid. I’m thinking we’ll also be able to use it to study literary devices like alteration, simile, metaphor, etc. It’s really a workhorse language arts tool that’s so versatile! But yes, it begins with handwriting/penmanship.

Thank you ladies! I didn’t realize it would go into so much more later on. We will be starting year 1 next fall. Now I know that it will be so much more and can look forward to that 🙂

We use dictation as well. Young children start with copy work. As they get older, dictation is added for spelling and grammar practice. They are two separate exercises. At first we did copy work every day. We slowly switched some of those days to dictation. My daughter is 13 now and she does copy work one day a week and dictation twice a week.

Sonya has made a lovely video on how to do studied dictation when the child is ready. I highly recommend it and it’s free. 🙂

Melanie is right. Studied dictation is a different exercise than copywork. But in what I said above I was just thinking along the lines of  how the copywork selection can be used as your material for those things. 🙂
