Okay, for some reason here is the picture I have in my head of doing history along the lines of CM, please tell me if I am forgetting something important:

    Read living books.

    Narrate those books.

    Keep a Book of Centuries.

Do map drill once a week.

For some reason that seems crazy, that we are not doing any projects related to what we would be learning, writing much, etc.  (Though I suppose with older students narration could be written…).  Can you tell we are a unit study family that likes to do lapbooks?  I am really loving the simplicity of this idea though.  It’s a busy family here (5 under age 9) and I would like to simplilfy some areas.

Yes, it’s that simple. The children do all the mental connections themselves so you don’t have to do all the work to make the connections for them, like in unit studies. Now, a BOC isn’t for young ones by themselves, but for older ones, like your 9 yr. old. You can do a family however, since all yours may be close together. Also, a timeline in a book or on the wall is another option.

Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t do lapbooks, notebooking and other projects to go along with your living books, if ya’ll are a creative family, not to mention movies and/or documentaries. Previously, I used the Homeschool in the Woods Time Travelers history CD-rom activities in conjunction with living book suggestions w/TQ.

Thanks Rachel – what I really want is to focus more on math and writing skills (strengthen those foundations) and take a reading approach to history.  Science is my kids’ favorite, so we will keep it hands on.  Hmmm.

    Oh, and yes, my kids are close:  8, 5, 4, 2, 1.  🙂  I was thinking a family BOC.

Then keep the hands-on in the science department and do those 4 things for history, the basics and best of a CM History, and it’ll be great. One addition that you didn’t include is the history books read independantly by your 8 yr. old and they can either narrate or not.

A family BOC will be great. For further simplification, so you don’t have to look them up and print out online, I’d recommend the Homeschool in the Woods History Through the Ages Figures to put in that BOC; just my opinion.

I added on the Christian Cottage Unit Studies to this book list. It has really mom friendly projects and a lot of science involvement.  You can get their Oceanography study free at http://www.currclick.com  look for Christian Cottage.

We didn’t do everything listed, but just fun things when I felt like it.  That way its simple and you are not rushed.
