Is an iPad really worth it?

I budget a certain amount monthly to cover our curriculum costs.  This year and next, we are actually not spending as much as I thought we would, so there is a surplus. Dh suggested buying an iPad.  While I think that would be nice, I don’t want to spend the money on that unless we’ll actually use it.

If you have one, do you use it for school?  If so, how much would you say?  What are the things you use it most for?  I do find myself using my laptop during school, but not too often.  I will say that the idea of Google Earth and maps and such are one of things I know we will use.  That is what we look most often on the laptop.

We do have a Kindle that we use often.  We’ve had it for 2 years and it’s one of the reasons our school costs have gone (that and now having a great library within driving distance).  Dh and I occasionally want to use it at the same time so I know we’d use the Kindle app on an iPad as well.

It’s just a lot of money to me and I want to know if it will really enhance our schooling, if that makes sense?

I love especially the bible apps bible.is and bible360. Think those will be the biggest enrichments to our daily schoolwork. Then of course the ibook app is so much more user friendly then the kindle. I am honest I do not like to use the kindle at all. I mean I love having a hundred books at my fingertips but it is so user-UN-friendly compared to the ipad. To the question is it worth it – if you are a tech-geek and and an apple-lover like me then yesWink Once you have it you discover so many uses of it and wonder how you lived without it before BUT you can also do homeschooling just fine without oneWink. Hope that helped a little bit!

Yes, it’s worth it. We use ours daily in our homeschool and have dozens of apps and books. I greatly prefer traveling with it over my MacBook. At home for my personal use, I prefer the MacBook.

i would definitely look into the refurbished ones on the Apple website. I didn’t know about that option before I bought ours. My understanding is that the refurbished ones come with the exact same warranty and function but cost as much as $100 less. You can’t buy them in the store; they have to be ordered through the website. If I had known about it, I think I would have gone that route.

We really enjoy our IPAD but sometimes I wonder if it was really worth it. We use it but not for anything that we couldn’t do in some other way. I probably need to spend more time looking at APPs and such but I don’t have that time to spare right now.

I was the original poster of the linked post above, and since then we did buy an iPad and have used it a LOT!  Granted, we use it for fun games too, but DD prefers playing educational games on it.  She learned her African countries playing the various geography games, and is now learning US geography just for fun.  She loves playing math games too.  I also downloaded the Burgess books on the Kinder app for free since we are reading them for science.

I personally use it for productivity, email, Facebook, internet, reading, and games. DH really likes it too, so much so that he is contemplating getting another iPad for work so he doesn’t have to lug his laptop home.  It takes so long to boot up, and the iPad is fast.

We got the iPad thinking more for educational needs.  It was DH’s idea, and I had no idea how much we would enjoy it!  We are definitely getting our money’s worth!

I have a blog post on this topic at http://outsidetheboxhomeschooling.com/?p=140. There are quite a few reviews on apps as well. We are almost set up to be completely on the ipads next year. We homeschool on the go allot, so they work very well for us. Currently, we have one for both children. Hope this post helps:)
