  • Ok, I have a Kindle Fire for the kids, I love that you can set up time limits etc…and it shuts off when done. I am hoping to get, my husband approved :), an ipad. I am so excited, the only thing is, i am new to all of this, do not even own a smartphone, that is coming also because I just found out that we can get one for the same amount we are paying now without one. Okay..first question, if I have a smartphone I do not need ipad w/ cellular right? We want to keep costs down, I do not travel but once or twice a year, hoping to do more as more children leave the house but hotels have wifi and most restaurants and stuff and I won’t be using it in the car. Also..I have decided on the 10″ as I think that would be best. What about Smartphones? Which one has a good camera and is a good, easy phone to use for a beginner? I am not big into all of this but hoping to learn a lot as I believe it would help me with organizing and a bunch of other stuff.

Hello! If you are getting a smartphone, you would probably not need cellular on an ipad. I have an ipad without cellular now, but my first ipad did have cellular. I found that once I had a smartphone, I did not use the ipad outside of the house very often.

If you are getting an ipad, I would recommend getting an iphone. The two will sync wirelessly, saving time with calendars, apps, notes, etc. They also work the same way, so much so that my ipad just feels like a giant iphone:) That cuts down on the time it takes to learn how to use it. The camera is very good for a non-photographer like me! I do not even use a point and shoot anymore.

If you prefer not to get an iphone for some reason, a friend of mine has a samsung galaxy 3?, I believe, and really likes it.

Have fun! There are lots of fun learning apps for both.

OH thank you!! I can get an iphone 4 for free, is it too outdated and would it work with an ipad 4? See..told you, I know nothing..ha! I can pay a bit more and get an iphone 4s but an iphone 5 would cost me like $200, I think.

we still use our iPhone 4 and don’t feel like we are missing out – it is not outdated, it runs on the sam iOS as the new ones, the only feature(s) you won’t have are Siri (which we really don’t miss) and the displays have been updated, but that’s no big deal. I agree though – we are a house full of Apple products, I love having everything sync!

Dh and I each have our own iPad and our own iPhone 5. I love the capabilities and flexibility of both. My iPad is the original one, so it does not have 3G capabilities, but this has never really bothered me. I really only use it at home. I like eBooks in PDF format, and those can be read any time without 3G access, so if I’m in the passenger seat of the car on a long trip or sitting by the swimming pool, I can still read the things I enjoy. My iPad doesn’t have a camera, but dh’s does (his is the 2). We love our iPhone 5s. They have great cameras–and are so convenient, I don’t even use my Nikon D3100 digital camera much anymore. I don’t use my iPhone with my iPad at all. For me they are two separate devices and I don’t need to use them together. If I want an eBook on my iPhone, I simply download it. My phone and my iPad have separate things on them because I use them for different purposes. iPhone is more for my personal use as a phone, browser (when in the car or needing something quick), Pandora, Dirty Dozen app, Planning Center Online, Fandango, etc. My iPad gets used more for school with educational apps, Pandora, as my main cookbook in the kitchen, and for watching YouTube videos with the kids.

Okay..so is the ipad 3 similar to ipad 4, I could save money and get the ipad 2 even but I really like the “idea” of it being quicker as far as watching you tube or streaming because we live in the country ..not sure that makes a bit of difference. Also..was considering the iphone 4s just because it has a better camera and I do not own a camera, if I am carrying around a phone would like it to have a good camera.

eeek…too many options. I had the lady at apple this morning tell me ipad 2 would work just as well for what I need it for? Mainly school apps, organizing my stuff, reminders, calendars etc..maybe watching some shows or streaming videos for kids off amazon, I think apple has an amazon app?

Anyone else??? I had thought about getting the refur ipad 3, with an apple iphone 4s??? Looking at phones and reading reviews has got my head swimming, wanting a good cameral, good reception and just a decent phone, easy to use???

Your video streaming speed is going to be based more on your internet and Wi-Fi connection than the speed of the iPad. The newer, faster models will just respond a bit quicker to your actions, etc. It may very well be true that the iPad 2 would be sufficient for your needs.

The newest model has a higher resolution screen (Retina display) that looks really great. You’ll have to decide if that’s important enough to pay the extra.

If you can go to a store and get your hands on them that would be a great way to try some of the things you want to use it for.

Keep in mind that you’re also buying into an ecosystem. If you get the iPad, you’ll also want an iPhone and not some other device. That way they will work together and can sync with each other, which is really nice.

The iPhone 4, 4S, and 5 are all nice devices. There is a big difference between camera quality from the 4 to the 4S and 5. The 5 has faster data, but only if you live in an area that has LTE cellular. Right now that’s mostly around cities and freeways, though it’s starting to filter out to smaller areas too. But in the country it might not even be a factor.

Assuming you have some sort of high-speed internet with Wi-Fi at home, you’ll mostly use your devices with that connection. The cellular speed would only make a difference when you’re out and about.

Doug..thank you, that explained a lot, I think I understand a bit more…great! You just made my life a lot easier, I appreciate it!

Well..I am getting a refurbished Ipad 3 and the iphone 4s. Now..what apps are good for homeschooling, organizing, reminders etc… can you give me some ideas? Thank you!!
