Hi All! We are expecting another really cold winter here and since I am still pretty new to the concept of my kids being indoors for an entire season (practically) I am keeping my eyes open for good indoor activities or toys we can use on those cold days. My kids are 6-13 years old. What things do you consider essential for indoor play/recreation? Hoping your experiences will help round out our pretty minimal collection of toys and help me to come up with a list of things they can do when they are claiming boredom. Thanks!
LinabeanParticipantFamily and independent games
Play dough
Clay
Lego and other types of building toys
Snap circuits
Science/exploration kits and experiment kits
Wii games that can be played as groups or in two’s
Music and dance
Dress up
Puppets
Toy kitchen play (felt food is the best IMHO)
All sorts of handicrafts are somehow more enjoyable during cold snaps (crochet, needle crafts, woodburning, wood carving, loom crafts, etc.)
Making plays out of people and animal toys and recording them, then watching them together
Learning to draw certain favourite animals and objects well
Painting
Making paper snowflakes
Of course….books!
These are all things that we do during our long, cold, Alberta winters. The specific toys my kids like the best are good quality toy animals with model horses being the ultimate! Lego, dolls, pretend kitchen and play house stuff, Playmobile. We do a lot of the activities that i mentioned, though. Just as much as the actual “toys”.
Hope you find something in there that sparks your interest!
TristanParticipantHandicrafts!
MistyParticipantI love this post. I could also use ideas for my teen boys who are use to spending time hunting, shooting BB guns, and playing in their forts. I don’t know what to do with them this year??
LinabeanParticipantCould they learn how to whittle or make small woodworking projects? Learn a skill such as programming?
missceegeeParticipantGreat ideas! I live in FL where we can go out all year very easily though it’s HOT in summer. Anywho, a mini trampoline is fabulous for getting the wiggles out. I use my rebounder for exercise, but all of my kids 13, 10, 7, almost 5 LOVE it! It’s in the corner of my bedroom and is easy to use at any time.
rutsgalParticipantMarble games on the floor – simple as taping a bullseye to the floor .
Creating / building a marble run with paper towel tubes , plastic cups etc.
Indoor bowling – we have an indoor set that I found at a store & my kids play this a lot in the winter. You can use filled water bottles for the pins & maybe a coconut .
Indoor horseshoes – we have a soft rubber set
Balloon ping pong – tape / staple a large Popsicle stick to the edge of your paper plate – that is your paddle to hit the balloon with.
Swinging targets for nerf guns – tie plastic cups to something that would allow them to hang & swing – like your dining table light fixture & let them practice shooting the cups. You could also tape balloons to the floor for targets.
Pom Pom ball races W/ straws.
Have fun getting creative!!

ServingwithJoyParticipantWow! These are great ideas!! I am bumping this to see if anyone has more…
LinabeanParticipantLove the balloon ping pong idea! We’ll be using that one this winter, for sure! Thanks rutsgal!
missceegeeParticipantWe have a ping ping net for the kitchen table that’s awesome!
rutsgalParticipantMy secret weapon is PINTEREST 🙂 I am on pinterest a lot and I find it very helpful. I am sure if you searched for rainy day games or indoor kids activities etc…. — a myriad of stuff might pop up.
