I bought too much at once. I got Outdoor Secrets w/ companion, 106 Days of Creation, and Hours in the Out-of-Doors. I may as well do them all since I have them. I am just beginning with SCM. I wanted to begin a nature study this week. My plans were to do 106 Days…. and the Hours…. books together. But, since I got Outdoor Secrets and it is classified for younger students, should I do that first? It looks like science and nature study are intertwined in that. Then when I am finished with that, I could just pick up with the others. My dd is grade 3 and I was planning to do nature study through the summer. Any suggestions?

Just do Outdoor Secrets and when you finish it go on to 106 Days. We do nature study on top of this about once a week or so. Sometimes our nature study is inspired by what we are learning in science, sometimes I will pull an idea from something else, and sometimes it is jus spontaneous. Slowly add your subjects. It can be overwhelming to start everything at once. Have you read A Pocket Full of Pinecones by Karen Andreola? It is a fictional story based on a family just starting out with CM style learning. The mother in the story starts adding subjects slowly, mainly starting with nature study. It is a fun read.

I agree – start with Outdoor Secrets, then move on to 106 Days of Creation.  We started 106 days when my son was in 2rd grade and continued it till the end of 4th grade.  We added a bunch of things to make it a bit more meaty for him (part of the reason it took so long to complete – the other part was science took a back seat when I was put on bedrest for a few months), and we all loved every second of it.  Outdoor Secrets wasn’t around when we first started, but I’m sure it’s just as easy to add extras as certain things peak your daughter’s interest.  (I’m also sure it won’t be necessary to add anything too.  My son just happens to be an advanced learner and a science lover, so he was always wanting more info.)

Thanks. That is what I was leaning toward doing. I may not take a lot of time doing Outdoor Secrets. I guess we’ll see once we get into it. My daughter will love nature study. We can do that all summer without it feeling like ‘school’. I also got Our Animal Friends science from Queen’s. My daughter loves animals too. Maybe I’ll have her do some of that when we get to Day 6 in the creation guide. So, I don’t need to look for any science for quite a while:)
